Notes: Background:  Caudal epidural injection with local anaesthetics is a popular regional technique used in infants and children. A disadvantage of caudal blockade is the relatively short duration of postoperative analgesia. Opioids have traditionally been added to increase the duration of analgesia but have been associated with unacceptable side-effects. A number of nonopioid additives have been suggested to increase the duration of analgesia. Methods:  A systematic review was conducted to identify randomized control trials comparing the use of local anaesthetic to local anaesthetic with nonopioid additives for caudal blockade in children. The increase in duration of analgesia and side-effects were compared. Results:  The addition of clonidine to the local anaesthetic solution produces an increase in the duration of analgesia following caudal blockade in children (pooled weighted mean difference of 145 min with 95% confidence interval of 132–157 min). Side-effects include sedation and the potential for neonatal respiratory depression. Ketamine and midazolam further increase the duration of analgesia, however, the potential for neurotoxicity remains a concern. Conclusion:  The evidence examined shows an increased duration of analgesia with clonidine, ketamine and midazolam. However, we are not convinced that the routine use of these adjuvants in the setting of elective outpatient surgery shows improved patient outcome. It is unclear if the potential for neurotoxicity is outweighed by clinical benefits. Further testing, including large clinical trials, is required before recommending routine use of nonopioid additives for caudal blockade in children.

Notes: Abstract. In this paper we check the validity of the ideas of double scaling as given by Ball and Forte in a semi inclusive process like $J/\psi$ production at HERA, in different kinematical regions, for low values of the Bjorken variable $x$ . In particular, we study $J/\psi$ production in the inelastic and diffractive (elastic) regimes using the double scaling form of the gluon distribution functions. We compare these predictions with data (wherever available) and with other standard parameterisations. We find that double scaling holds in the inelastic regime over a larger kinematic region than that given by the analysis of the proton structure function $F_2^p$ . However, in the diffractive region, double scaling seems to suggest an admixture of hard pomeron boundary conditions for the gluon distribution, while predicting a steeper rise in the cross section than suggested by present data.

Notes: Abstract. We present a next-to-leading order calculation of the cross section for the leptoproduction of large- $E_{\bot}$ hadrons and we compare our predictions with H1 data on the forward production of ${\rm\pi}^0$ . We find large higher order corrections and an important sensitivity to the renormalization and factorization scales. These large corrections are shown to arise in part from BFKL-like diagrams at the lowest order.

Notes: Abstract. Dilepton production in heavy ion collisions in the intermediate mass region (IMR) has consistently shown an excess over theoretical estimates. An attempt to understand this discrepancy between the observed dilepton pairs and the theoretical estimate is made here through the production of the $\eta_c$ meson and estimates obtained by NRQCD calculations. We find that $\eta_c$ production offers a satisfactory quantitative picture for explaining the discrepancy.

Notes: Abstract. A mechanism for instanton induced chiral symmetry breaking in an extended QCD model (QCD with fundamental scalars) is proposed to describe quarks and gluons inside a baryon. The model Lagrangian that we use has the same symmetry properties as QCD. The scalar fields are shown to develop vacuum expectation values in the instanton background and generate masses for the three generation of quarks. The minimization condition is also used to break the flavour symmetry to make the $s$ -quark heavier that the $u$ and $d$ quarks.

Notes: Heavy metals like Cu2+, Cr6+, and Hg2+ were removed successfully from wastewater and concentrated in a strip aqueous solution for recycle using the hollowfiber-contained liquid membrane (HFCLM) technique. Using cotransport, Cr6+ and Hg2+ present as anions in the feed solution were transferred individually through a liquid membrane containing tri-n-octylamine in xylene and concentrated in an alkaline solution on the strip side. The removal efficiency of each heavy metal was studied as a function of the aqueous feed flow rate in an HFCLM permeator. Copper present as cation Cu2+ was removed and concentrated by countertransport using LIX84 in n-heptane as the liquid membrane. The efficiency of copper removal was studied as a function of feed copper concentration, feed flow rate, strip flow rate, and area ratio between the feed fiber set and strip fiber set. The strip side flow rate did not affect the Cu2+ transfer rate. A theoretical model presented predicts the copper transport rate from the feed solution to the strip solution in an HFCLM permeator with a variable feed to strip-side membrane area. Both feed aqueous boundary layer and interfacial complexation reaction on the feed side dominate the observed Cu2+ removal process through LIX 84 in n-heptane for feed concentration levels used 90-500 mg/L. It was verified by providing two times larger liquid-liquid interfacial area in the feed aqueous side or in the strip aqueous side. The model can be used to design the membrane area required on the feed and strip fiber sides to remove essentially all of the copper from a given wastewater stream.
