Notes: This paper deals with the formulation and the evaluation of a new three node, nine d.o.f. triangular plate bending element valid for the analysis of thick to thin plates. The formulation is based on a generalization of the discrete Kirchhoff technique to include the transverse shear effects. The element, called DST (Discrete Shear Triangle), has a proper rank and is free of shear locking. It coincides with the DKT (Discrete Kirchhoff Triangle) element if the transverse shear effects are not significant. However, an incompatibility of the rotation of the normal appears due to shear effects. A detailed numerical evaluation of the characteristics and of the behaviour of the element has been performed including patch tests for thin and thick plates, convergence tests for clamped and simply supported plates under uniform loading and evaluation of stress resultants. The overall performance of the DST element is found to be very satisfactory.

Notes: A finite element algorithm is developed to predict the strain distribution of sheet forming parts and to evaluate their formability at the design stage. The algorithm is simply called the inverse approach since we know the positions of the material points on the final product and we determine the positions of the corresponding material points in the initial blank. This is also a direct algorithm which avoids the path dependent incremental procedure of plasticity and contact. This paper presents some theoretical aspects related to the large logarithmic strains with membrane triangular elements, the deformation theory of plasticity, the isotropic and anisotropic material properties of metal sheets and the non-linear solution techniques. Some particular problems are also studied, such as the influence of friction forces under the punch and blankholders, the ‘optimization’ of the initial blank's contour and the deep drawing in several steps. The results are compared with those obtained by experiments and by the more classical incremental approach.

Notes: The choice of strain-displacement relations to fomulate curved finite elements for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of deep thin shells of general shape is discussed. It is clearly demonstrated on a simple arch problem how the strain-displacement relations can affect the buckling pressure and it is concuded that inconsistent expressions should be avoided.

Notes: This paper deals with the static and dynamic (free vibrations) analysis of plates built up with a symmetric series of orthotropic layers. The formulation of a new simple triangular finite element having three nodes and three degrees of freedom per node is presented. The element called DST (Discrete Shear Triangle) is free of shear locking and has a proper rank. It coincides with DKT (Discrete Kirchhoff Triangle) when the transverse shear effects are negligible. A large number of classical problems is considered to evaluate the performance of the element for the analysis of composite plates. Very satisfactory results are obtained for displacements, stresses and frequencies.
