    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé La calcification de la peau (calciphylaxie) provoquée par l'administration sous-cutanée de chlorure de fer chez des rats sensibilisés par le dihydrotachystérol (DHT) est précédée par une déposition sélective de fer (décelable à la microscopie électronique) à la surface des fibres collagènes. Les analyses à la microsonde prouvent que les taux de calcium et de phosphore sont augmentés à l'endroit de l'injection du chlorure de fer même sans l'administration préalable de DHT; cependant, l'apatite ne se forme que chez les animaux prétraités par le DHT. La quantité et le degré de cristallinité de la matière inorganique sont presque identiques au sixième et au trentième jour de l'expérience.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Durch elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchungen wurde festgestellt, daß die durch subcutane Verabreichung von Eisenchlorid bei Dihydrotachysterin-sensibilisierten Ratten herbeigeführte Hautverkalkung durch eine selektive Eisenablagerung auf der Oberfläche der Kollagenfibrillen eingeleitet wird. Die Röntgenmikroanalyse zeigt an, daß die lokale Calciumund Phosphorkonzentration bereits nach Eiseninjektion allein ansteigt, während Apatitbildung nur in den mit DHT vorbehandelten Tieren erfolgt. Ausmaß und Menge der Kristallisation sind am 6. und 30. Tage nach Versuchsbeginn fast gleich.
    Notes: Abstract Calcification of the skin (calciphylaxis) induced by the subcutaneous administration of iron chloride to dihydrotachysterol (DHT)-sensitized rats is preceded by the selective deposition of iron (visible with electron microscopic techniques) on the surface of collagen fibrils. Electron probe X-ray microanalysis indicates that the injectionof iron alone suffices to increase local concentrations of calcium and phosphorus; however, apatite formation occurs only in animals pretreated with DHT. The amount and degree of crystallinity of the inorganic material is very similar on the sixth and thirtieth day after the beginning of the experiment.

    Notes: Summary The infrared (IR) spectra of KBr pellet preparations of tetracycline (TC) complexes with hydroxyapatite (HA) indicated that the binding of the antibiotic to bone mineral can occur independently at each of two ligands. The shifts in the IR spectrum occur for the keto-enol ligand of rings B and C and for the tricarbonylmethane grouping of ring A. Analogs that lack one or the other of these groups are able to form complexes with HA in which the common portion resembles that of the parent molecule.

    Notes: Summary Study of two Paleo-Eskimo skulls found in a necropolis on St-Lawrence Island (Alaska), including radiography and histological examination, revealed the following features. One of the skulls showed a perforation with remodelled borders, considered to be due to trauma and secondary infection. The other showed areas of osteolysis characteristic of a malignant tumor (probably carcinomatous metastasis rather than myeloma). These cases illustrate the advantage of using various methods of investigating bone pathology, particularly microradiography, in skeleton paleopathology.

    Notes: Abstract Osteofluorosis was induced in rabbits by the ingestion of 500 ppm F in their drinking water over a period of 30 days. The tibiae from experimental and control animals were selected for macroscopic, microscopic and microradiographic observation. Transverse sections of 100 μm thickness were prepared for an electron-microprobe analysis to determine Ca, P and F concentrations and to display the topographical distribution of F as revealed by the X-ray image of its Kα1 radiation. Variation in amount of periosteal and endosteal deposition was observed along the length of the bone. Changes, including numerous mottled osteones, were seen in the compact zone of bone which had been formed prior to the start of the experiment. The Ca/P ratio appeared to show a variation related to the F concentration.

    Notes: Summary Low temperature ashing by excited gas (LTA) causes crystallographic and paramagnetic alterations of the human bone and tooth enamel mineral. On the one hand, LTA induces variations of thea lattice parameter. These variations depend upon the nature of the gas used, but are little affected by its degree of excitation. Trapping of gas molecules in the crystal structure is demonstrated. On the other hand, LTA produces two preponderant paramagnetic centers in bone and enamel samples at 20°C. Their inorganic origin is clearly indicated. One of the two radicals has been identified as O3 − (g1=2.002, g2=2.010, g3=2.016) and the other as CO 3 3− (g‖=1.996, g⊥=2.003). Variations of thea lattice parameter and trapping of paramagnetic gas species do not seem to be directly related.

    Notes: Summary The evolution of the mineral constituents of subcutaneous calcinosis induced in rats by topical calciphylaxis was studied by the method of quantitative chemical analysis, and after treatment with excited gases by electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis. Chemical data show that the genesis of the subcutaneous calcinosis does not significantly alter the concentration of Ca, P, F, CO3, Mg, and Fe in the mineral phase of the femoral bone of calciphylactic rats. In the calcinosis an important increase of the fluoride concentration is noticed in function of the time after challenging. There is also a high concentration of Mg2+ ions in the early stages of the experimental calcification. Iron injected for the challenging is continuously present in the calciphylactic tissue after this treatment. This suggests that subcutaneous calcinosis might be a means of fixing certain heavy metal ions. After treatment with excited gases, the proportions of the trapped CO3 3− and O3 − radicals are of the same order of magnitude in calciphylactic tissue after 12 days and observations in bone mineral. These suggest that after 12 days the mineral of the calciphylactic tissue has a crystalline state close to that of bone.
