    Notes: Abstract The human immunoglobulin lambda-like (IGLL) genes, which are homologous to the human immunoglobulin lambda (IGL) light chain genes, are expressed only in pre-B cells and are involved in B cell development. Three IGLL genes, 14.1, 16.1, and 16.2 are present in humans as opposed to one, λ5 (Igll), found in the mouse. To precisely map the location of the human IGLL genes in relation to each other and to the human IGL gene locus, at 22q11.1–2, a somatic cell hybrid panel and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) were used. Hybridization with a λ-like gene-specific DNA probe to somatic cell hybrids revealed that these genes reside on 22q11.2 between the breakpoint cluster region (BCR) and the Ewing sarcoma breakpoint at 22q12 and that gene 16.1 was located distal to genes 14.1 and 16.2. Gene 14.1 was found by PFGE to be proximal to 16.2 by at least 30 kilobases (kb). A 210 kb Not I fragment containing genes 14.1 and 16.2 is adjacent to a 400 kb Not I fragment containing the BCR locus, which is just distal to the IGL-C (IGL constant region) genes. We have determined that the IGLL genes 14.1 and 16.2 are approximately 670 kb and 690 to 830 kb distal, respectively, to the 3′-most IGL-C gene in the IGL gene locus, IGL-C7. We thus show the first physical linkage of the IGL and the IGLL genes, 14.1 and 16.2. We discuss the relevance of methylation patterns and CpG islands to expression, and the evolutionary significance of the IGLL gene duplications. Consistent with the GenBank nomenclature, these human IGLL genes will be referred to as IGLL1 (14.1), IGLL2 (16.2), and IGLL3 (16.1), reflecting their position on chromosome 22, as established by this report.

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract. In enterprise-wide workflow management systems (WfMS) the workflow engine may have to cope with a very high load. In addition, the availability of such a system must be high. Many architectures for scalable WfMS have been proposed in the literature, which are based on different distribution models of the workflow engine. These distribution models are analyzed, compared, and classified. Based on this classification, two example scenarios are used to simulate and compare the load resulting for the different distribution models.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung. In unternehmensweiten Workflow-Management-Systemen (WfMS) kann die von der WF-Engine zu bewältigende Last sehr groß werden. Außerdem werden hohe Anforderungen an die Verfügbarkeit eines solchen Systems gestellt. Deshalb wurden in der Literatur zahlreiche Architekturen für skalierbare WfMS vorgeschlagen, die auf unterschiedlichen Verteilungsmodellen für die WF-Engine basieren. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden diese Verteilungsmodelle analysiert, verglichen und klassifiziert. Aufbauend auf diese Klassifikation wird für zwei Beispielszenarien die bei den verschiedenen Verteilungsmodellen entstehende Last simuliert und verglichen.

    Notes: Recent studies exploring sibling rivalry in the allocation of household resources in the USA produce conflicting results. We contribute to this discussion by addressing the role of sibling rivalry in educational attainment in Germany. Using the German Socioeconomic Panel (GSOEP) we are able to distinguish how the effects of sibling rivalry vary by cultural affiliation, i.e. among families of West German, East German and foreign origin. We also point out and correct for a reference group problem in earlier papers analyzing sibling rivalry.

    Notes: Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of sheepskin effects in the return to education in Japan. Design/methodology/approach - The paper provides a short description of the Japanese schooling and recruitment system. It then describes the data set and the empirical approach. Estimation results are presented for the various specifications. The baseline specification closely follows existing studies for the USA to facilitate comparability across the two countries. The paper further investigates whether there are significant firm-size differences in the estimated sheepskin effects and whether sheepskin effects disappear with increasing job tenure. Findings - The estimation results indicate that sheepskin effects explain about 50 percent of the total returns to schooling. The paper further finds that education as a signal is only important for workers in small firms with the size of these effects being similar to comparable estimates for the USA. Finally, the estimated degree effects decrease with firm tenure, in particular for small firms. These results could be explained by the particular recruitment system of large firms in Japan, which makes university diploma as a screening device unimportant for large firms and the admission policy of Japanese universities. Originality/value - By investigating the role of sheepskin effects in a labor market that differs substantially from the labor market in the USA, the paper provides additional insights to the human capital theory-screening hypothesis debate.

    Notes: China's tourism and hotel education at tertiary level started in the late 1970s. A lack of qualified tourism educators and employees is a common concern for all levels of Chinese tourism education. Further education and training for the faculty in institutions has become an urgent need for the Chinese government and the institutions themselves. The purposes of this study are to examine the education needs of tourism academics in terms of their perception of the value of upgrading their qualifications, the likelihood of further studies, levels of attainment, preference of study places and possible barriers; to understand the degree of importance of upgrading their qualifications; and to identify the main tourism training and education issues facing China in the twenty-first century. The results suggest that the Chinese academics perceive upgrading their qualifications and getting more exposure to the outside world as important to them. The training and education issues facing China in the twenty-first century are improvement of the tourism education system and its structure, improvement in the design of the syllabuses with more language training and the balance of theory and practice, change from a traditional teaching mode to a more modernized innovative and interactive teaching mode, and greater responsiveness of education to the needs of the industry.
