Notes: In order to strengthen research coordination and increase the effectiveness of investments, the Swiss Centre for International Agriculture (ZIL) embarked on a formal priority-setting exercise. The paper documents the decision-making process, examines the application of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) as decision-support tool, and discusses the outcome of the process. Starting with a set of alternative research areas and potential decision criteria, the process went through several steps where necessary information was gathered and processed, criteria structured and weighted, and alternative research areas assessed against criteria. The AHP helped structure the multi-criteria decision problem, elicit criteria weights, and evaluate the expected contributions of the alternatives to the previously defined objectives. The outcome of the process was a prioritized list of potential research areas for ZIL's next programme phase. Sensitivity analysis was performed to test the stability of the priority ranking. The paper concludes with a discussion on the group decision-making process and an outlook onto the next steps towards a better focused research agenda of ZIL.

Notes: This article proposes a framework in which knowledge compilation can be exploited in a principled manner for the task of generating natural language. We have constructed an utterance generator for one side of a realistic dialogue that exploits compiled knowledge of, for instance, the effects of discourse pragmatics on text plans, and the effects of register, style, and politeness on text realization. The motivation for this work is the significant impact that compiled knowledge has on the speed of language generation.

Notes: Abstract One aspect of agroforestry is the integration of indigenous species into appropriate land use systems. Some local trees and shrubs are particularly appreciated because of their value in human nutrition. The Ferlo is the most arid part of Senegal, covered by open woodland. The local population is using several indigenous plants for food. Most important are Adansonia digitata, Balanites aegyptiaca and Ziziphus mauritiana, as well as Boscia senegalensis and Cassia obtusifolia. Some 20 more species are consumed to a smaller extent. Their main function is to supply the vitamins A, B2 and C, for which seasonal shortages occur. About 50% of all plants growing in the Ferlo have edible parts, but only the most common ones are consumed. Further exploitation of these natural resources and their conscious integration into agroforestry systems is economically and ecologically recommendable.

Notes: Abstract The Southwest Regional Laboratory, through major funding from the National Science Foundation (ESI-9450235), has developed a series of eight instructional modules for use in common secondary school physical science that address three central goals of U.S. science literacy education: (1) to motivate students who have previously shown little interest in science; (2) to accomplish deep change in students' internalized conceptions of the structure and workings of the physical world; and (3) to build greater understanding, in both teachers and students, of the process and culture of scientific activity. Beginning with a discussion of the conceptual scaffolding that undergirds the project's pedagogical approach, the paper presents an overview of MindWorks' goals, the materials that have been developed to achieve these goals, and the progress of the pilot implementation and project evaluation.

Description / Table of Contents: Structure of PentaphenyldisilaneFor the first time Pentaphenyldisilane was prepared by Gilman and Goodman. It is produced by the reaction of Ph3SiLi with Ph2ClSiH. The crystal structure presents an ideally staggered conformation. The distance d(Si—Si) = 235.7 pm corresponds to a normal single bond length. This emphasizes the complete relief of the central Si—Si bond by the insertion of only one hydrogen atom.
