    Notes: Abstract The effect of needle radius, cone angle and shaft diameter on the threshold voltage and angular intensity — total current relationships for a Ga liquid-metal ion source (LMIS) was investigated. The variation of threshold voltage with needle geometry could be described in terms of the Taylor theory of liquid cone formation by electrostatic fields. The beam energy spread was mainly a function of total source current and was not a sensitive function of emitter geometry. Source angular intensity at a constant total current increased linearly with threshold voltage when the latter was altered due to source geometry.

    Notes: Thin films of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) have been evaluated as quarter-wave, antireflection dielectric coatings for application in magneto-optic data storage media. The films, which are produced by plasma deposition from methane, have low optical absorption at 830 nm wavelength, high refractive index (n≈2.1), and provide enhancement of the polar Kerr rotation (θk) when used in conjunction with rare-earth–transition-metal (RE–TM), TbFe, or TbFeCo alloys. The chemical stability, inertness, and homogeneity of the carbon films makes them effective diffusion barriers to oxygen or water vapor and thus provides excellent protection against environmental oxidation of the RE–TM layer. Dynamic disk performance data show improved write sensitivity of the media when used with a-C:H dielectric layers.

    Notes: High electric fields may be used to create ions either by field evaporation, as in the case of liquid metal ion sources (LMISs) or by field ionization, as in the case of gas-phase field ionization sources (GFISs). LMISs have now reached a mature state of development and have found an increasing number of focused beam applications, ranging from submicron mask repair to maskless ion implantation. They may be fabricated from either pure elements, or from alloys, provided that the element or alloy vapor pressure is low enough to avoid excessive evaporation. In the case of alloys, it is necessary to employ a mass filter, typically a Wien filter, to remove unwanted ion species from the ion beam. Angular intensities, at the threshold of source operation, range from 1 μA/cm2 for alloy LMIS ion species to 20 μA/cm2 for elemental LMISs; under the same operating conditions, the ion energy spreads are ∼5 eV. Recent advances in the development of GFISs raise the possibility that GFISs may be nearing the stage when they also might be used in fine focus applications. By special shaping of the metal emitter in the apex region and by cooling the emitter to ∼20 K; it has been found possible to cause confinement of the ion emission to ∼0.5° half-angle, thereby increasing angular intensities of beams of He+ or H+2 to values similar to those obtained from LMISs.

    Notes: A review is given of Lorentz microscopy and its application to the study of laser-written domains in amorphous rare-earth/transition-metal–type materials. Domains, or regions of reverse magnetization, were written under various conditions of laser power and applied magnetic field in TbxFe1−x films where x varies in the range 0.14–0.32. Upon examination by Lorentz microscopy, and under certain conditions, these written regions show highly detailed magnetic structures. One condition for obtaining good images is the avoidance of oxidized surface layers showing in-plane magnetization. Another condition is tilting of the film plane in the transmission electron microscope to enhance image contrast. A variety of domain structures have been observed ranging from fully saturated regions with both highly regular and irregular boundaries, to fully demagnetized regions. An example of correlation between the field dependence of the microstructure and measurements of magneto-optical signal is given for the x=0.32 composition. Results are presented of carrier signal and noise measurements made on a film on a rotating disk.
