Notes: Summary Nestmate recognition has been frequently reported in the social Hymenoptera though published reports of this phenomenon in ants typically involve workers. Arguments involving inclusive fitness suggest that reproductive females (queens and alates) should be accepted less often than workers in foreign colonies; males may or may not elicit fewer aggressive responses. Dealate queens from a monogynous/polygynous sibling species pair (Formica argentea andF. podzolica) and alates of both sexes from the polygynous species were tested with familiar and unfamiliar nestmates, foreign conspecifics, and heterospecific workers. Workers from the polygynous species were less likely to reject foreign conspecific queens than workers of the monogynous species. In all cases except controls and between species introductions, foreign males were accepted more readily than foreign alate females.

Notes: Summary Paraponera clavata foragers employ a trail pheromone and activation within the nest to obtain mass recruitment to simulated nectar sources. Foragers leaving and returning to the nest normally follow the same path. The existence of a trail pheromone was inferred from a series of experiments in which different techniques were employed to disrupt main foraging routes. Individuals baited to simulated nectar sources were observed to drag their gasters in a distinctive fashion when returning to the main trail. The return of an individual from a bait site resulted in greatly increased foraging activity from the colony. A maximum of 352 individuals were recruited within an hour following presentation of the bait. Recruited individuals were able to find the bait site in the absence of the initial forager by following the path taken by the initial forager. Even under normal, unbaited, conditions ants leave colonies in a temporal sequence that suggests social facilitation.

Notes: Abstract Objective: Definition of the changes in the activators of plasminogen, u-PA and t-PA, and examination of the possible generation of plasmin in the circulation in overwhelming sepsis. Design: Serial blood analysis starting 4 h after development of symptoms of toxic shock syndrome. Setting: Intensive care unit. Patient: A previously healthy woman underwent endometrial ablation and rapidly thereafter developed staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome with organ failure. Measurement and result: t-PA, PAI-1, t-PA-PAI-1 complexes, plasminogen, fibrinogen and plasmin-α2-antiplasmin complexes were measured serially by ELISA and free u-PA by SDS-PAGE with zymography. The onset of symptoms was accompanied by a rise of t-PA antigen followed rapidly by PAI-1 antigen. Plasmin-α2-antiplasmin complex was generated in large amounts but disappeared within hours. From day 3, free u-PA was detectable in the circulation without plasmin generation. Conclusion: Despite the sustained presence of active u-PA in the circulation and of t-PA antigen at the onset of symptoms, plasmin-α2-antiplasmin generation was largely suppressed by high levels of PAI-1. The suppression of plasmin generation by u-PA and t-PA may ensure the persistence of fibrin in the microcirculation and so contribute to organ failure.

Notes: Abstract We show that three distinct orthographic views of three points in a rigid configuration are compatibel with at most 64 interpretations of the three-dimensional structure and motion of the points. If, in addition, one assumes that the three points spin about a fixed axis over the three views, then with probability one there is a unique three-dimensional interpretation (plus a reflection). Moreover the probability of false targets is zero. In the special case that the axis of rotation is parallel to the image plane three views of the three points are sufficient to obtain at most two interpretations (plus reflections)-unless one assumes the angular velocity about the axis is constant, in which case three views of two points are sufficient to determine a unique interpretation. Closed form solutions are obtained for each of these cases. The systems of equations studied here are in each case overconstraining (i.e. there are more independent equations than unknowns) and are amenable to solution by nonlinear programming. These two properties make possible the construction of noise insensitive algorithms for computer vision systems. Our uniqueness proofs employ the Principle of upper semicontinuity, a principle which underlies a general mathematical framework for the analysis of solutions to overconstraining systems of equations.
