Notes: Abstract  Geoindicators are high-resolution measures of short-term (〈100 years) surface or near-surface changes in earth processes, and phenomena that are significant for environmental monitoring and assessment. They are based on standard concepts and procedures and can be used to track changes in fluvial, coastal, desert, mountain, permafrost and other terrestrial areas. Geoindicators assess both catastrophic events and those that are more gradual, but evident within a human lifespan. Most deal with changes on the landscape (0.1–10 km) and meso-scales (10–100 km), but some, such as relative sea level and volcanic unrest, have regional and global dimensions. Some are complex and costly to measure, others are relatively simple and easy to apply. Geoindicators can also be used to unravel trends over the past few centuries and longer through paleoenvironmental research, thus providing the important baselines against which human-induced and natural stresses can be better understood. Geoindicators have been designed by the International Union of Geological Sciences as an aid to state-of-the-environment reporting and long-term ecological monitoring.

Notes: Summary One hundred and twelve patients with spontaneous supratentorial intracerebral hemorrhages were reviewed to identify features which distinguish lobar intracerebral hemorrhage (LH; n=42) from thalamic or basal ganglionic hemorrhage (TGH; n=70). Chronic hypertension occurred more commonly in TGH (TGH 67%; LH 48%) while bleeding diathesis was more common in LH (LH 19%; TGH 6%). Clinical presentations were extremely variable and not associated with the type of hemorrhage. Bleeding into the ventricles and hydrocephalus occurred more often with TGH. At last follow-up, there were minimal differences between LH and TGH in overall mortality and functional outcome of the survivors. Alertness on admission was associated with a good outcome regardless of the type of hemorrhage, while a low Glasgow Coma Scale score, coma, ataxic respiration, abnormal pupil reactions, acute hypertension, large hemorrhage size and intraventricular blood were associated with a poor outcome. These data confirm etiological distinctions between LH and TGH, but fail to confirm previously reported differences in clinical presentation and outcome.

Notes: Abstract Onset of diabetes mellitus in the newborn is rare. Treatment at this young age using the low-dose continuous infusion of insulin as the method of choice, proved to have the advantages observed in older patients.

Notes: Abstract We report two cases of diffuse neonatal haemangiomatosis. The multiple cutaneous lesions were associated with massive hepatic involvement and congestive heart failure in one, while in the other laryngeal haemangiomas caused stridor and inspiratory distress. A significant regression in vascular lesions was achieved with high dose corticosteroid therapy.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In 16 rabbits sciatic nerves were sectioned immediately before their division into the fibular (lateral popliteal) and the tibial (medial popliteal) nerves. With the help of collagen film and 2-cyanoacrylate glues a reconstruction of the nerve stumps was effected. Using this technique, both simple anastomoses and the bridging of a defect by means of an autologous transplant were undertaken. The regeneration was examined at specific time intervals using clinical, electromyographic and histological criteria. Regeneration was disturbed by cyst formation in the region of the collagen tubes, by scar proliferation, and by histotoxity of the glue even in the region of the undamaged nerves. Previously regenerated bundles revealed new signs of degeneration. These results do not approach those which follow the use of the microsurgical needle and unterfascicular nerve transplantation.

Notes: Summary This paper discusses the computation of multiple solutions of various discretizations of the steady state incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Solution paths (α,R) satisfying the discrete system of equationsH(α,R)=0, where α represents the discrete flow field andR is the Reynolds number, are computed using a pseudo arc-length continuation procedure. For flows over the back end of an axially symmetric body with a cusped tail in a coaxial circular cylinder, the solution paths often exhibit “hairpin” turning points. Dependence of the paths on the mesh spacing and various selections for the discretizations of the convective and diffusive terms are presented.
