Summary A photometric method has been developed, which allows continuous measurement of platelet aggregation without addition of aggregation inducing substances. Plateletrich citrated plasma is drawn out of a siliconized rotating flask (37°C, 20 rpm/ 10 min.). When aggregation occurs the number of free platelets decreases and the resulting change in optical density is measured in a flowing through-cuvette. In addition to the angle α1, which corresponds most closely with the results of the conventional platelet aggregation test (PAT), the onset (tr) and the speed of aggregation (α2/α3) can be observed. The clinical investigations with the photometric PAT in the age-group below 40 years showed the maximum aggregation in 24% (n=78) of normal subjects and In the age-group of over 40 years in 45.4% (n=33) of “healthy” subjects. In the age-group of over 40 years maximum aggregation was found in 45.2% of patients with arteriosclerosis obliterans (n=73), in 54.0% of patients with diabetes mellitus of more than 5 year's duration (n=87) and in 57.6% of patients with recent myocardial infarction (n=59).
Notes:
