Notes: Abstract A 6-year follow-up study was carried out on 28 patients fitted with removable partial dentures. Prior to the prosthetic treatment all patients were given oral hygiene instruction and periodontal therapy where indicated. The removable partial dentures were carefully planned and designed. During the follow-up period the patients were examined at yearly intervals when remotivation, scalings, conservation and prosthetic adjustments were carried out as required. Patient cooperation was excellent and no significant deterioration of the periodontal status of the remaining teeth could be found, In addition the number of newly registered carious lesions was low. A certain degree of deterioration of occlusion, articulation, stability and clasp retention of the dentures fitted did occur, however.

Notes: The aim of this paper is to highlight the complexity in the connection between alcohol intoxication and responsibility for crime from a multidisciplinary approach comprising medical, legal and criminological perspectives. There is no doubt that there is a connection between violent behaviour and alcohol intoxication. However, several investigations show that alcohol heightens aggressiveness only when the drunken person is provoked. A case which may serve as a model when discussing legal responsibility for acts carried out when drunk is outlined. Ethical considerations are discussed and exemplified concerning the motive, as well as the principles, of punishing an intoxicated perpetrator. However, there are no definite solutions concerning what is right or wrong, and each reader will have his own opinion, which may well differ from that of the author.

Notes: In this study 49 women seeking hospital treatment for wife battering injuries were compared with 49 female alcoholics and a control group consisting of 49 women treated in hospital for accidents. At one time or another two-thirds of the female alcoholics had been battered and the majority of these women showed the same pattern of severe, prolonged abuse as the 49 women seeking hospital treatment for wife battering injuries. The women in these groups were also similar in that many of them had experienced violence in their own childhood environment, in that they had cohabited with more men than the women in the control group and in that the frequency of depressive symptoms was high. An analysis restricted to the battered women in each of the three groups revealed similarities between them. The battered women in the control group did not, however, show any signs of more severe psychopathology or alcoholism. It is concluded that mental health is of crucial importance for the woman's ability to break away from an abusive male.

Notes: In today's increasingly competitive market, it is important both to delight and to avoid disappointing the customers. Thus, it is of value to have a systematic process for obtaining feedback from the customers, not only as a basis for corrective action relating to current products, but also as vital input to the new product development process. How can we meet our present and future customers' expectations, if we do not have a feedback process that handles available information? This study investigates how this feedback process functions, and it seeks potential improvement. Three organizations are studied, and data are collected through interviews and personal observation. The case studies are conducted as a collaborative project with three Swedish manufacturing companies and the Department of Total Quality Management at Chalmers University of Technology.

Notes: Summary Twenty-eight orthopaedic patients were taught to wash their entire bodies with chlorhexidine gluconate on two consecutive days preoperatively, starting in their homes. The operation field was also washed a third time. A bacteriological evaluation was performed using contact plates. A significant reduction of the skin flora, including Staph. aureus, was registered. No adverse side effects of total body-washing were observed.

Notes: Abstract This study compares patients with controls concerning sociodemographicvariables and describes Swedish and foreign-born patients concerningpsychiatric disorders, suicide risk, history of attempted suicide, suicidemethod, number of parasuicides and time from discharge to suicide. It isbased on 59 psychiatric in-patients who had committed suicide, of whom 46were native Swedes and 13 foreign-born, and on a random sample of 630controls living in the same area of Stockholm, Sweden. There was an excesssuicide risk for being foreign-born with a crude odds ratio of 1.94 (CI = 1.01 – 3.76) in an unconditional logisticregression. In the final model, single living, having a somatic disease andbeing unemployed were major risk factors for committing suicide. There wereno differences between Swedes and those of foreign birth concerningdistribution of certain background variables (i.e., suicide risk, diagnosesand quality of care assessed via clinical records). Only 39% of thepatients were classified as high risk by the doctor-in-charge at admission. This is significantly lower (p 〈 0.001) than theretrospectively rated risk. Planned aftercare was considered as satisfactoryfor about half of the patients. About two-thirds of the patients did notparticipate in aftercare or almost immediately discontinued the contact.More attention is necessary in order to motivate the patients to take partin aftercare and there is a need for better co-operation between hospitaland out-patient clinics.

Notes: Abstract Twenty-nine chronic male alcoholics were examined with the Profile of Mood States (POMS). Tests with the POMS scale were carried out on the ward on Days 1 and 5 and after 21 days of sobriety. Our aim was to study the mood change in chronic alcoholics during detoxification and after 3 weeks of sobriety compared with a standard group (college students) and with psychiatric outpatients. A further aim was to study whether the patients who later underwent a Minnesota treatment program(n = 6) differed in mood compared with those who did not. An improvement was observed over time regarding all six POMS factors. The results for Day 21 were generally better than the expected normal values for the POMS profile sheet with regard to both psychiatric outpatients and college norms. The follow-up based on the patients' records 1.5–2 years after the detoxification occasion in question showed that 18 patients had been hospitalized, generally for alcohol detoxification. The 6 patients who participated in a Minnesota treatment program had no documented relapses. A comparison of these 6 patients with the rest showed that the former had significantly lower values on five of the subscales.
