Notes: Summary The lattice dynamics of Li-intercalated FePS3 has been studied by means of a force constant model generated by a set of short-range two-body potentials. The intercalated phases have been investigated for the three stoichiometric compositions: Li0.5FePS3, LiFePS3, Li1.5FePS3, with the aim of analysing the evolution of the host lattice normal modes as a function of the concentration, and of finding the dispersion of the new phonon branches induced by lithium. The above special values of lithium concentration have been chosen because the size of the unit cell keeps the same as in the host material. The force constants are fitted to the infrared data and the phonon dispersion curves and the phonon energy densities have been calculated. A spectroscopic method for monitoring lithium migration in the host material is proposed.

Notes: We present the calculation of the Raman spectra in backscattering configuration for AlxGa1−xAs (001) superlattices and modulated alloys, based on the bond-charge-model dynamics, the average t-matrix approximation for compositional disorder and the bond polarizability model for the Raman tensor. The features of Raman spectra are shown to reflect the Al concentration profile along the growth axis, hence providing a valuable tool for compositional characterization of superlattices.

Notes: We assessed the time course of electrograms sensed both in the atrium and ventricle by two different steroid-eluting electrodes: Medtronic Capsure SP (with an area of 5.5 mm2) and Z (with an area of 1.2 mm2). We considered 68 unipolar electrodes: 31 atrial (19 Capsure SP 4523 and 12 Capsure Z 4533) and 37 ventricular (24 Capsure SP 4023 and 13 Capsure Z 4033) implanted in 47 consecutive patients (30 men and 17 women, with an age of 72 ± 9.4 years). The pacemaker model was Medtronic Elite 7077–7086 (DDD-DDDR) in 25 patients and Medtronic Legend 8419–8424 (VVIR-AAIR) in 22 patients. The endocavitary signal (all patients had spontaneous rhythm) was telemetrically obtained by a Medtronic 9790 device and acquired on a personal computer at implantation and 7, 30, and 180 days thereafter. The signal was studied both in the time domain and in the frequency domain by spectral analysis. The following parameters were calculated: amplitude (A): peak-to-peak value of the complex; slew rate (SR) peak negative first derivative; F0: frequency at which the power spectrum reaches its maximum value; and bandwidth (Bw): expressed as the distance between the –3 dB points and statistically analyzed by a two-way analysis of variance with factors “time” (four measurements) and “electrode” (Capsure SP and Z) and repeated measurements on the former. Ventricular sensing: no time or electrode effect (P〉0.1 in all comparisons) was found for F0, Bw, or SR, while a time effect (P 〈 0.04) not dependent on the type of electrode was found for the amplitude of the signal. In particular, a significant increase was found between the measurement at 6 months and that at implantation (P 〈 0.004). Atrial sensing: A, F0, and bandwidth were not affected by time or electrode (P 〉 0.09), while SR behaved differently over time (P 〈 0.05) in the two electrodes (the Capsure Z showed an increase at sixth month [P 〈 0.04] compared to implantation). In conclusion, the Medtronic Capsure SP and Z electrodes proved to be valid and substantially equivalent as far as concerns the measurement of the intracardiac potential despite the difference between their surface areas. Further studies should be devised to assess whether transitory decreases of atrial Bw in the first month of follow-up observed in a few patients for both electrodes could be responsible for clinical episodes of sensing deficit.

Notes: Abstract To enlarge the field of application for polyester vascular prostheses in order to restore small-diameter vessels, original collagenic-based composites have been developed in our laboratory. The polyester knit of standard prostheses has been modified by radiochemical grafting of the Type I collagen-based matrix. In order to check the properties of this new coating, biological tests have been carried out. We noticed that on modified surfaces: fibrinogen adsorption is less important than albumin adsorption; only 50% platelets interact actively with the modified material in comparison with the other materials; the coating is more resistant to enzymatic degradation; and there is partial denaturation of the collagen but this collagen is still specifically recognized by Type I collagen antibody.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study was noninvasive assessment of respiratory compliance and resistance in mechanically ventilated patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF). To this end, flow, change in lung volume, and airway pressure were measured at the proximal tip of the endotracheal tubes in twenty nine critically ill unselected patients. Eleven had acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), 8 had adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and 10 had ARF of various etiologies. Static compliance (Cst,rs), ‘intrinsic’ PEEP (PEEPi), as well as minimum and maximum resistance (Rrs,min and Rrs,max, respectively) were obtained with end-inspiratory and end-expiratory airway occlusions. We found that: (1) PEEPi was present in all patients with COPD (up to 11.4 cmH2O) and it was not uncommon in patients with ARF without history of chronic airway disease (up to 4.1 cmH2O). (2) Without correction for PEEPi average Cst,rs was not significantly different between ARDS and COPD patients, whereas the average corrected compliance was significantly lower in ARDS patients. (3) Substantial frequency-dependence of resistance was exhibited not only by COPD patients, but also by ARDS patients.

Notes: Abstract To investigate the dose-response relationship and the time course of the effects of fenoterol (a selective β2-adrenergic agonist) on respiratory function in mechanically ventilated patients with acute respiratory failure due to exacerbation of chronic airflow obstruction (CAO), seven consecutive acutely ill patients were studied within 3 days of the onset of mechanical ventilation. Airflow, airway pressure, and changes in lung volume were measured with the transducers of the 900 C Servo Ventilator, the last by electronic integration. The end-expiratory lung volume (EELV), the intrinsic positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEPi), the static respiratory compliance (Cstrs), maximum and minimum respiratory resistance (Rrsmax and Rrsmin), and arterial oxygen tension (PaO2), were measured under control conditions (all patients were receiving aminophylline infused at a constant rate) 5, 15, and 30 min after administration of 4 ml aerosolized saline solution and 5, 15, and 30 min after inhalation of 0.4, 0.8, and 1.2 mg fenoterol. After the last dose, measurements were repeated at 60, 120, and 180 min. We found that, on average, while saline did not cause any significant change in respiratory mechanics, a low dose (0.4 mg) of inhaled fenoterol was followed by a rapid (5 min) and significant decrease in Rrsmax (−33%), Rrsmin (−28%), EELV (−34%), and PEEPi (−44%), with a slight but not significant further fall with higher doses. However, changes were short-lasting, and by 2h after the end of administration were no longer significant. PaO2 dropped significantly on average, with a maximum mean fall of 15 mmHg. We conclude that low doses of aerosolized fenoterol have a powerful and rapid but short-acting bronchodilating effect in mechanically ventilated patients with chronic airflow obstruction, bringing about a marked decrease in the dynamic pulmonary hyperinflation. These changes in respiratory mechanics can be easily and safely measured at the patient's bedside.

Notes: Abstract  A total of 6071 Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected on Swiss Army training grounds in five regions of Switzerland. The aim of the survey was to assess the prevalence of ticks infected with the human pathogens Francisella tularensis, members of the Ehrlichia phagocytophila genogroup, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, and the European tick-borne encephalitis virus. TaqMan PCR (PE Biosystems, USA) and TaqMan RT-PCR (PE Biosystems) analyses were performed on DNA and RNA extracted from pools of ten ticks grouped by gender. Here, for the first time, it is shown that ticks may harbor Francisella tularensis in Switzerland, at a rate of 0.12%. Furthermore, 26.54% of the ticks investigated harbored Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, 1.18% harbored members of the Ehrlichia phagocytophila genogroup, and 0.32% harbored the European tick-borne encephalitis virus. A new instrumentation was applied in this study to carry out and analyze more than 2300 PCR reactions in only 5 days. Furthermore, the results reveal that people working in outdoor areas, including army personnel on certain training grounds contaminated with ticks containing tick-borne pathogens, are at risk for different tick-borne diseases.
