Description / Table of Contents: Summary A report on the frequency of serum groups in south-west Germany. Haptoglobulin groups in 1,856 people: Hp 1−1=15.4%; Hp 2−1=47.7%; Hp 2−2=36,9%; Hp=.3928; Hp 2=.6072. The frequency of Gc groups were: (n=747): Gc 1−1=60.5%; Gc 2−1=34.5%; Gc 2−2=5.0%; Gc1=.7778; Gc2=.2222. The Gm groups in 965 subjects were: −Gm(a+x+)=26.5%; Gm (a+x−)=29.2%; Gm (a−x−)=44.3%; Gm3=.191; Gmax=.143; Gmb=.666. While the frequency of the Hp genes showed no significant differencesin various comparable European peoples, there are such differences in respect of the Gc and particularly of the Gm genes. Attention iscalled to the fact that the Hp gene appears to be evenly distributed in Europe while Gc and, particularly, Gm show greater lack of homogeneity. Further confirmatory investigations are necessary before interpretation of the significane can be possible.

Notes: Summary Acetylcholine receptor, isolated in Triton X-100 on a cobra α-neurotoxin affinity column was incorporated into unilamellar phospholipid vesicles by a detergent depletion method using Amberlite XAD-2. Vesicles of an average diameter of 25 nm were formed, as verified by freeze-fracture electron microscopy and gel filtration. 85 to 95% of the α-bungarotoxin binding sites of the reconstituted acetylcholine receptor were oriented towards the outside of the vesicles. In the reconstituted receptor one molecule of residual Triton X-100 per 2.5 α-bungarotoxin binding sites on the receptor molecule could be assessed. The reconstituted protein was not accessible to papain digestion, whereas the pure acetylcholine receptor, solubilized by Triton X-100 was split into smaller polypeptides under the same condition. Reconstituted acetylcholine receptor and receptor-rich membranes did not exhibit the same behavior as measured by use of a potentiometric dye. This is interpreted as an irreversible alteration of at least 95% of the receptors purified in the presence of Triton X-100. Furthermore, it could be shown that the fluorescence intensity changes induced by carbamylcholine in receptor-rich membranes did not reflect ion fluxes, but conformational changes of the protein or a displacement of the dye from the protein.

Notes: Background: Papular xanthoma (PX) is one of several clinicopathologic variants of normolipemic cutaneous non-Langerhans cell histiocytoses (n-LCH). PX represents a monomorphous reaction pattern of n-LCH characterized by the presence of predominantly xanthomatized macrophages. Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify the clinical, histological and immunohistochemical characteristics of PX. Methods: A series of 10 cases of PX was identified and the results compared with the other histologic subtypes, namely the polymorphous and the remaining other monomorphous reaction patterns in n-LCH. Results: In this clinicopathologic study, papular xanthoma presented clinically mainly as solitary papule, with a male to female ratio of4 : 1, in an age range from 13 to 57 years and a biphasic occurrence: in the young adolescence and middle ages. It was predominantly located on the trunk, the extremities, and rarely on the head. Clinically, PX was described as xanthoma, ‘cutaneous tumor’, but also as atheroma, keloid, histiocytoma, Spitz's nevus or clear cell acanthoma. Histology showed moderately well circumscribed exoendophytic papules with a regular epidermis and a dense infiltration of xanthomatized macrophages interspersed by numerous Touton type giant cells. Immunohistochemically mono- and multinucleated macrophages were consistently positive with KiM1p; while only giant cells were labeled with KP1 (CD68), the reactivity with HAM 56 was much more variable. Up to 50% of the xanthomatized cells labeled positive for the lectin peanut agglutinin. In one case the xanthomatized cells stained positive for CD34. Staining for factor XIIIa and CD1a were negative. Conclusions: This series confirms PX as a rare, but distinguished clinicopathologic entity in the spectrum of n-LCH of the skin.

Notes: [Auszug] The facts to be emphasized here are on one hand their finer structure revealed in high-resolution electron micrographs, and on the other, their occurrence in various other chicken tissues. Upon close examination, it was found that they have not one but two distinct membranes (Fig. 1) : an outer one ...
