    Notes: Abstract Hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride films have been deposited by the rf magnetron sputtering method with non-stoichiometric and stoichiometric compositions using a poly-Si target and a mixture of Ar, H2 and N2 as the sputtering gas. Data on optical and infrared absorption, electrical conductivity, breakdown voltage, capacitance measurements and thermal evolution of hydrogen have been presented as a function of nitrogen concentration in the films, especially in the stoichiometric region of composition. Attempts have been made to identify the roles of hydrogen and nitrogen in determining the electrical and optical properties and thermal stability exhibited by the films. Properties relevant for device application of the material have been shown to be comparable to those obtained by glow discharge or electron cyclotron resonance plasma chemical vapour deposition methods of deposition. RF magnetron sputtering has therefore been suggested as a viable alternative to the more widely adopted CVD methods for device applications of silicon nitride, where the use of hazardous process gases can be avoided.

    Notes: The structural properties of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) have a profound effect on the characteristics of the devices based on this material. The structural properties of the films were varied by depositing the samples at different substrate temperatures and characterized by secondary neutral mass spectroscopy, hydrogen evolution technique, and photothermal deflection spectroscopy. The results were correlated with the primary photocurrent data of a-Si:H Schottky barrier devices. It was observed that there is an optimum in both the rigidity of network and hydrogen content for the realization of the best film and device properties.

    Notes: A residual method of finite differencing the governing differential equation for the elliptic transport problem is presented. The new finite differencing technique is applied to (1) the one-dimensional transport problem and (2) the cavity flow problem for numerical illustrations. The results indicate the validity of the residual method of finite differencing. The usual method of term-by-term finite differencing, and considerations such as central differencing, hybrid differencing and upwind differencing are not needed in the present residual method.

    Notes: A finite difference method of solving problems of free convection in a parallel plate channel with or without internal obstructions is presented. It uses the steady-state governing equations including the axial diffusion terms, and it does not require pressure matching or conditions to obtain the solution. The buoyancy-induced upward velocity is self-generated without requiring any extra effort or strategy over that normally used for iterative finite difference solution of elliptic equations. The method simply uses the average upward velocity from one iteration to the next until convergence. Comparison and a few illustrations are included to indicate the validity and usefulness of the method. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
