Notes: To review mass transfer trays from a process point of view, the dependence of efficiency on the loadings, the loading range and the maximum loadings with an acceptable tray efficiency have to be known. Comparing the results taken from experiments on Dualflex trays and from other types of trays which have been in industrial applications for many years and which are recognized as “industrial standard”, has been evaluated in this review.

Notes: The suitability of any item of equipment for a given thermal separation process cannot always be judged solely in the light of efficient and loading range data. In vacuum rectification, involving a large number of theoretical stages, the vapour pressure drop per transfer unit exerts a considerable effect on the energy consumption and thus largely governs the choice of column fittings. Furthermore, the pressure drop per transfer unit determines the temperature at the bottom of a rectification column and, hence, the suitability of the equipment for the separation of heat-sensitive products. It is also an important criterion for compressor requirements in absorption processes. Another factor of considerable importance in separating heat-sensitive mixtures by distillation is the time during which the product, particularly the liquid phase, is exposed to a given temperature in the column. Therefore, a standardized liquid residence time has been adopted to evaluate the systems in their entirely. This residence time depends on the hydrodynamic conditions in the column and is thus closely related to pressure drop and efficiency. Further important factors, which may decide the selection of column internals, are the specific volume and mass of the column. Based on theoretical considerations, a flow model is derived for describing the main loading range of countercurrent packed columns; the relationships between the above mentioned parameters are presented.

Notes: The correct choice of packing is of decisive importance for optimum process efficiency in the operation of two-phase countercurrent columns. An important criterion for this choice is the pressure drop in the gas flow. Theoretical relationships are derived for calculating the pressure drop in beds with dry and trickle packings. It has been demonstrated by comprehensive experiments that these relationships allow the pressure drop to be determined more accurately than by previous methods. The experiments were performed at the Department of Thermal Separation Processes of Bochum University on 54 different packed beds, using 24 different systems.

Notes: This contribution presents the determination of liquid hold-up in gas/liquid two-phase countercurrent columns filled with random or structured packings. The equations resulting from the established physical relationships are varified against the values for liquid hold-up determined experimentally on 56 different column packings and 16 gas/liquid systems. The experimental and calculated results agree well, with only slight deviations. This also applies to the range between the loading and flooding points for two-phase countercurrent flow.

Notes: Evaluations of Packings and the Limitations of their further Development. The performance of a newly developed packing can generally only be determined experimentally. Tests can be carried out to find the dependence on geometry, load and physical properties of the system, a knowledge of which is required to develop a physical model. Such a model then enables description of the fluid dynamic behaviour and the effectiveness of mass transfer within packed columns and their dimensioning. The model also clearly indicates the possibilities and limitations of further development of packings. Practical examples will confirm the theoretical considerations.

Notes: Gas is fed into static countercurrent extractors with the goal of introducing more energy into the binary liquid/liquid system. Increasing the turbulence raises the particle dispersion and thus increases the mass transfer area. This in turn should lead to improved mass transfer. Decision aids for more or less promising use of inert gas in liquid/liquid extraction are presented on the bases of recent publications and the authors' own studies and correlations.

Notes: Development of Packings and Their Optimal Surface Geometries - State of the Art. There is a growing demand in industry for contact elements of the kind used in mass and heat transfer processes. It has been responsible for further development of established forms of packing and for new developments in packed beds arranged at random or in fixed geometric patterns. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical studies have revealed the factors that decide the performance of these packings and the limits of their development. It can thus be clearly demonstrated that technical measures impose limits on the improvements in efficiency that can be achieved. On the basis of costs considerations, combined with the results of performance studies, the paper shows how optimum geometric area of a dumped or arranged packings can be determined.
