Notes: Summary In the present note the author has considered the torsional vibration of a cylindrical shell of non-homogeneous material whose rigidity and density vary linearly with distance from the axis of the shell. It is assumed that one end of the shell is fixed while the other end is acted on by a periodic shearing force, both the inner and the outer curved surface being free from stress at all times.

Notes: Summary In the present note the problem of torsional vibration of a bar in which the moment of inertia and the torsional rigidity are proportional to μ0 + μ1s, wheres is the spanwise co-ordinate and μ0 and μ1 are real numbers, has been considered.

Notes: Summary We have studied the Einstein relation of the diffusivity-mobility ratio of the carriers in Bi in accordance with the McClure and Choi, the hybrid, the Cohen, the Lax and the ellipsoidal parabolic energy band models under magnetic quantization, cross-field configuration, quantum wells, electric-field-aided quantum wells, quantum wells under cross-field configuration, quantumwell wires, electrifield-aided quantum well wires and quantum well wires under cross-field configurations, respectively. The Einstein relation varies with various physical variables in different manners which are totally band structure dependent. We have also suggested an experimental method of determining the diffusivity-to-mobility ratio in degenerate materials having arbitrary dispersion laws.

Notes: Summary We study the subband energies in quantum wells and quantum wires in the presence of a parallel magnetic field in non-parabolic semiconductors, on the basis of a generalized dispersion relation considering all types of anisotropies of the energy-band parameters within the framework ofk·p formalism, by formulating the respective electron energy spectra. It is found, by takingn-Cd3As2 as an example, that the subband energies are greater for quantum wires and smaller for quantum wells, respectively. The magnetic field diminishes the above values and the corresponding well-known results for quantum-confined parabolic semiconductors have also been obtained from our generalized expressions under certain limiting conditions.

Notes: A method is developed for the simultaneous determination of the equation of state and heat capacity of a gas over a wide range of pressure and temperature. This is based on stepwise construction of pT isochores starting from one experimental reference pV isotherm and using speed-of-sound data of the gas as a function of pressure and temperature. The application of the method is illustrated by computing the density and heat capacity of argon at temperatures from 148.15 to 298.15 K and at pressures from 100 to 1000 MPa. In the region of overlap, the calculated densities are found to be in good agreement with those obtained previously from direct measurements.

Notes: An apparatus for the measurement of sound velocity in gases up to pressures of 10 kbar and down to temperatures of 77 K is described. Important features of the experimental setup include a specially designed ultrasonic cell with double reflectors, based on the phase comparison pulse-echo technique, and a vacuum type of cryostat using a cold finger system for temperature control. Detailed measurements on argon down to the melting line show that the method is capable of giving a precision of 0.02% for the sound velocity.

Notes: Abstract This study assessed the natural killer (NK) cell activity profile during Plasmodium cynomologi infection in rhesus monkeys. There was a significant decrease in the NK cell activity in the peripheral blood leukocytes of infected monkeys during the early, asending phase of infection. However, as the parasite load decreased, NK cell activity returned to normal levels. This could be correlated with the peak increase in lymphocyte counts. This indicated that a decrease in NK cell activity observed at an earlier stage during an active P. vivax malarial infection was a temporary phenomenon.

Notes: The treatment of Reynolds equation when the film thickness is unknown and the center of pressure is known, together with the energy and the bending equation, allows a realistic simulation of the performance of large thrust bearing. In a spring-supported thrust-pad bearing the distortion caused by the generated pressure thermal gradient yields a surface profile of opposite shapes. The thermoelastic analysis performed here makes it possible to determine the resultant film shape of the thrust pad.

Notes: [Auszug] THE ionisation potential of hydrogen fluoride has not yet been worked out experimentally. Several attempts have been made to calculate it on thermo chemical data, on the assumption that hydrogen fluoride is ionised into H+ and F−. Such a calculated value, notably ...
