    Notes: Summary Cultured cells derived from a psammomatous meningioma were induced to from whorls in vitro by deprivation of nutrients. The ultrastructural features of desmosomes and junctional complexes were similar to sections from the surgical specimen; also prominent were 9–10 nm cytoplasmic filaments. Microelectrode recording of whorled cells showed a larger resting membrane potential than that of similar isolated meningioma cells in culture. Whorl formation seen in this tumor may be a result of relative nutritional deprivation and the need for metabolic cooperation among tumor cells.

    Notes: Abstract Stratiform Cu-Pb-Zn (-Au-Ag) mineralization associated with black carbonaceous schists and acid metatuffs is restricted to distinct horizons within the Cretaceous sequence of the Diahot region. The sulphides occur in sharply bounded lenses which show varying degrees of compositional banding conformable with the foliation of the country schists. The deposits are sedimentary-exhalative of the Rio Tinto-type and have been modified by mid-Tertiary high-pressure metamorphism (lawsonite-albite and glaucophanitic greenschist facies). The ores are not strongly deformed by the metamorphism and sedimentary structures, pyrite framboids and atoll structures are preserved in some deposits. With increasing metamorphic grade sphalerite becomes more iron-rich, pyrrhotite becomes more abundant, and the sulphides show a general increase in grain-size which parallels that of the silicates in the enclosing rocks. In the more highly metamorphosed deposits the sulphide associations are retrograde assemblages. There is no evidence of large-scale metamorphic remobilization of sulphides. No differences were observed in either the sulphide assemblages or in the composition of the sulphides to indicate that the metamorphism was of the high pressure rather than the low pressure type.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the physical performance in long-term survivors of acute leukaemia in childhood and to evaluate the effects of anthracycline therapy. Electrocardiography, echocardiography and spiroergometry were carried out on 56 patients aged 9–28 years, of whom 44 patients had been treated with 15–483 mg/m2 doxorubicin (or equivalent). Acute leukaemia had been diagnosed 1.5–16 years earlier. Of the patients 75% reached normal maximal oxygen uptake, 69% normal oxygen uptake at the anaerobic threshold and 95% normal maximal work rate. Of the patients 75% achieved adequate values for maximal heart rate and 78% normal blood lactate concentration. No difference was seen between patients treated with and without anthracyclines. Conclusion The results of this study provide little evidence for cardiopulmonary impairment in long-term survivors of ALL. Both the cardiac function, as evaluated by ECG and echocardiography, and the physical performance in spiroergometry are normal in a large number of these patients. Anthracycline treatment does not appear to have a negative effect on these parameters.

    Notes: Summary The possibility that steroid hormones play a role in vestibular schwannoma proliferation has been suggested by a number of investigators. There is conflicting information about the presence of steroid hormone receptors in these tumors. The aim of this study was to examine the expression of androgen, progesterone, glucocorticoid and estrogen receptor messenger ribonucleic acid levels (mRNA) in twenty-one vestibular schwannomas by either Northern blot analysis or the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Glucocorticoid receptor mRNA was expressed in all twentyone tumors examined. Only two male specimens were positive for androgen receptor mRNA expression by PCR-Southern blot analysis. Thirty-three percent of the schwannomas (7/21) showed a strong band for progesterone receptor mRNA by PCR-Southern blot analysis; there were an equal number of males and females in this group. Estrogen receptor mRNA levels were undetectable in all tumors examined by PCR-Southern blot analysis. These studies suggest that the pattern of steroid receptor expression is different in schwannomas than in meningiomas. Individual vestibular schwannomas need to be examined for their steroid receptor mRNA expression mRNA expression to know whether they will be responsive.

    Notes: Summary Apoptosis is a form of programmed cell death characterized by specific morphologic and biochemical properties. Tumorgenesis is the consequence not only of cell proliferation but also the loss of the ability to undergo apoptosis [2]. Bcl-2 is a protooncogene which has the ability to block apoptosis in many cell types. Astrocytic neoplasms are very aggressive tumors which many times fail to respond to surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. They frequently overexpress wild-type p53 which is associated with the expression of bcl-2, and thus they may have evolved a mechanism to subvert apoptosis and allow continued growth. We examined the apoptotic index in fifty-nine astrocytic tumors of various histological grades (Oncor ApopTag PlusIn Situ Detection Kit) and compared this with the level of bcl-2 expression. Low grade astrocytomas (0.21 ±0.05; range 0.0–0.9) and anaplastic astrocytomas (0.27 ±0.13; range 0.0–2.6) had significantly less apoptosis than glioblastomas (0.70 ± 0.13; range 0.0–2.1; Kruskal-Wallis test, P ≤0.01). In contrast, bcl-2 expression was similar in all grades of astrocytic tumors and did not correlate with the apoptotic index. Cells of low grade and anaplastic astrocytomas are less likely to undergo apoptosis; however, this does not seem to be a direct consequence of the regulation of bcl-2 expression. The difference in growth potential despite differences in apoptotic index is likely to be attributed to differences in mitotic not apoptotic activity.

    Notes: Summary  The clinical, radiologic and pathologic features of a case of parasagittal solitary fibrous tumor of the meninges are reported. The patient was a 44 year-old male who presented with a complex partial seizure and a history of headaches and confusion. Radiological studies showed a large extra-axial dural-based mass in the right parietal region, predominantly isointense with gray matter and hypointense with respect to white matter on T1-weighted images, and hypointense with respect to gray matter on T2-weighted images. At surgery, the mass was very vascular, quite firm and very adherent to the convexity. Histologically the tumor was composed of spindle-shaped cells growing in fascicles within a collagenous matrix. Solitary fibrous tumor of the meninges is a newly described entity, which should be kept in mind in the clinical and radiological differential diagnosis of extra-axial brain tumors.

    Notes: Summary  Objective. Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) and its mRNA have been found to be expressed in a variety of human tumors including breast, prostate, colon, lung, renal and ovarian cancers. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the expression of PTH/PTHrP receptor and ligand in human glial tumors.  Methods. We examined the coexpression of PTH/PTHrP receptor and ligand in 73 glial tumors of different histological grades and 4 nonneoplastic human brain specimens and three glioblastoma cell lines, by using Western Blot analysis and immunohistochemical analysis.  Results. PTHrP and PTH/PTHrP receptors were shown in the neurons, reactive astrocytes and the endothelial cells of normal brain tissue as well as tumor cells, reactive astrocytes and vasculature of nonneoplastic tissue. They were expressed at higher levels in pure astrocytic tumors as compared to tumors with oligodendroglial components.  Conclusion. PTH/PTHrP receptor and PTHrP ligand are co-expressed in human glial tumors. There increased expression suggests an autocrine and/or paracrine loop may exist.
