    Notes: Summary Fifteen organic solvents were examined to determine their biocompatibility for in situ extraction of fermentation products from cultures of the thermophilic anaerobeClostridium thermohydrosul furicum. Five solvents (hexadecane, isooctane, kerosene, oleyl alcohol, Shellsol TD) were found to be non-toxic toClostridium thermohydrosul furicum. Interfacial tensions, phase separation and partition coefficients for ethanol of the biocompatible solvents were compared. With the exception of kerosene, these solvents showed good separation from the aqueous phase. Oleyl alcohol had the highest partition coefficient for ethanol (KD=0.34 at 65°C) and appears to be suitable for extractive ethanol fermentation.

    Notes: New data on the variation of the diffusion coefficient with concentration in binary nonideal liquid mixtures are presented. The diffusion coefficients were measured with laser holography with an improved analysis procedure and are primarily in systems that form two liquid phases. The results show that for such systems the diffusion coefficient is constant if a chemical-potential driving force is used. If, however, the miscibility gap is wide, the Schreiner equation (Schreiner, 1922) is shown to be more accurate than relations that consider the variation of viscosity. Cluster theories developed for diffusion behavior near critical points were found to explain the data well only in water-organic systems on the water-rich side.

    Notes: The productivity of fermentations is often limited by end product inhibition. This can be avoided by continuous removal of the inhibiting product from the broth. Such in-situ separation can be conveniently accomplished by liquid-liquid extraction. As an example, the continuous fermentation of ethanol by the thermophilic, anaerobic bacterium Clostridium thermohydrosulfuricum is investigated in a 20-1 fermenter with simultaneous in-situ extraction by oleyl alcohol as organic solvent. Continuous fermentations with and without in-situextraction were carried out with systematic variation of the independent operating conditions, viz. feed glucose concentration, broth flow rate and solvent flow rate. The experimental results of 18 steady states are reported. They show that in-situ extractions doubles the yield, selectivity and space-time yield of ethanol in comparison to fermentations without in-situ extraction. A biomodel elucidates the influence of feed glucose concentration, broth flow rate and solvent flow rate on the productivity of the fermentation process. Finally, a cost model was developed for the investigated fermentation which allows economic evaluation of the results of experiments and simulation. A sensitivity study elucidates the economic limits and advantages of fermentation with in-situ extraction compared to a common fermentation without product separation.

    Notes: As a part of a research project on the mass transfer in liquid pulsed sieve-tray extraction columns (PSE), the diameters and hold-ups of the drops were measured: the drop size using a suction technique, with photoelectric detection, which was adapted to the special boundary conditions of the PSE; the integral hold-up by the pressure difference between the lower and upper parts of the column. Since experimental results cannot be described by known calculation formulae for the Sauter mean diameter and the hold-up, a new method of calculation was developed. It is phenomenologically based on high-speed photographs of the drop motion on a sieve tray. The mathematical-physical model allows the prediction of drop size and hold-up within certain limits, while the possible different operating regimes of the PSE, i.e. the mixer-settler and dispersion regimes can also be estimated.

    Notes: This contribution presents the methods of measuring the mass transfer in centrifugal extractors and of determining it during the individual life stages of a fluid element of the dispersed liquid, i.e. drop formation, motion, coalescence and stay in the stationary layer of the dispersed phase. The experimental mass transfer coefficients of the dispersed and continuous phases are compared with well-known theoretical models developed for extraction columns in gravitational field. Due to the fast motion and coalescence of the fluid particles at high centrifugal field intensities, mass transfer in centrifugal extractors takes place during short contact times. Nevertheless, this contribution shows that mass transfer in a centrifugal field can be calculated with selected theoretical models of the gravitational field. The investigations on mass transfer are completed by a classification of the strongly deformed fluid particles in centrifugal field into regimes of circulating and oscillating drops. In addition, data on the performance of centrifugal extractors, undergoing several exchange steps, are given.

    Notes: Dynamic behaviour of a stirred liquid-liquid extraction column was studied experimentally. Various input variables of the column were varied stepwise and the resulting variations in the system and output variables were measured. In addition to experimental work, a computer model was developed on the basis of the dispersion model to simulate the dynamic behaviour of the extractor. This model forms a component program of the dynamic process simulator DIVA, developed at the TU Stuttgart. The experiments showed that the hydrodynamic parameters exhibit no significant dynamic behaviour of their own. Therefore, changes occurring in these parameters closely follow variations in input and system variables. As a result, steady-state relationships for the calculation of flow parameters could be used in the simulation program. The simulator satisfactorily reproduced the experimental results for a number of disturbances. However, this was not always the case. As shown in the following, the model did not take into account the column level controller which, under certain conditions, exerts a very strong influence on the column's dynamic behaviour. As a result, larger differences occurred between experimental and simulated data. This influence on the extractor's dynamic behaviour can, however, be eliminated by a simple modification of the level controller arrangement.

    Notes: Fundamental investigations of coalescence processes in settlers with plate packages for the separation of liquid-liquid dispersions prompted an analysis of the drop motion on the interface of a stratified two-phase flow. Therefore, a physical model was developed, which permits the calculation of drop velocity along the interface of an inclined trickling film. Starting from a balance of forces around a single particle, the model provides the equation of motion for a steady motion of single particles in a stratified two-phase flow. Several assumptions and considerations were necessary to solve this equation, such as taking into account the influence of the wall and of flow resistance. The model calculation assumes Newtonian liquids and laminar, smooth trickling films. A comparison with experimental results confirms that the drop motion behaviour is well reproduced.

    Notes: Inclined plates are often installed as mechanical separation aids in gravity settlers for the separation of liquid-liquid systems. The authors investigated the process of coalescence of single drops on trickling films flowing off inclined plates. The method of investigation was developed by Blass and Rautenberg. It ensures that, under certain conditions, only hydrodynamic parameters influence the coalescence process to any significant extent. The coalescence time of the drops characterizes the process of coalescence. Short time between 1 and 3 seconds provide favourable conditions for coalescence whereas long times, often ten times as long or even longer are unfavourable. This contribution introduces a criterion for clear demarcation between these two ranges and also a determination of separation parameters for favourable conditions for coalescence. Furthermore, the function of the plates is described, which is determined by hydrodynamic and wetting processes. The characteristic operating regions of a plate are shown in a working diagram.

    Notes: This contribution deals with the consequences of the decrease in diffusion coefficients at the boundaries of miscibility in fluid systems and its effect on the mechanisms of mass transfer. The liquid-liquid (1-1) extraction involving several components is taken as an example for the discussion of this topic. A short review of Hampe's theory on transport mechanisms in the transition regions of interfaces [1] explains the intrinsic interdependence between mass and momentum transfer. Finally, a discussion of the peculiarities of resistances to mass transfer in boundary layers, based on the changes in molecular transport properties, is presented.
