Die Struktur wurde aus Einkristall-Diffraktometerdaten bestimmt und zu einem Restwert vonR=0.032 für 649 Strukturfaktoren und 24 veränderliche Parameter verfeinert. In diesem neuen Strukturtyp haben die Kohlenstoffatome annähernd oktaedrische Umgebungen, die aus fünf Uran- und einem Rhenium- bzw. vier Uran- und zwei Rheniumatomen gebildet werden. Die Positionen der Metallatome entsprechen denen einer kubisch raumzentrierten Packung. Dies gilt auch für die Strukturen von Ho2Cr2C3, UCr4C4, UMoC2, YCoC und U2IrC2.
    Notes: Abstract U5Re3C8 crystallizes tetragonal in space group P4/mbm with the lattice constantsa=1 131.3(1) pm,c=330.29(7) pm,V=0.4227 nm3 andZ=2 formula units per cell. The structure was determined from single-crystal counter-data and refined to a residual ofR=0.032 for 649 structure factors and 24 variable parameters. It is of a new type with carbon atoms on three different sites with approximately octahedral environment of five uranium and one rhenium or four uranium and two rhenium atoms. The positions of the metal atoms correspond to those of a (slightly distorted) cubic body centered structure as is also found for Ho2Cr2C3, UCr4C4, UMoC2, YCoC, and U2IrC2.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of the first part of the paper is to give some advice for the faultless metallographic preparation of vacuum plasma sprayed coatings. Several coating/substrate combinations using metals, alloys and ceramics were investigated to derive some general rules. The second part deals with a preparation technique for cross-sections- of physical vapour deposition coatings. This technique was optimized for TiN and Ti(C, N) coatings on hardmetals which were examined in an analytical transmission electron microscope.

    Description / Table of Contents: Die Carbide RE2MnC4 (RE = Y, Er, Tm) mit Er2FeC4-StrukturDie Titelverbindungen wurden durch Schmelzen kaltgepreßter Pillen der elementaren Komponenten im Lichtbogen dargestellt. Sie kristallisieren mit der rhombischen Er2FeC4-Struktur, die aus Röntgendaten eines Einkristalls von Er2MnC4 verfeinert wurde: Ibam, a = 760,4(1)pm, b = 937,1(1)pm, c = 504,0(1)pm, R = 0,021 für 524 Strukturfaktoren und 17 variable Parameter. Y2MnC4 wird bis zu 1,7 K nicht supraleitend. Die chemische Bindung in diesen Carbiden wird kurz diskutiert.
    Notes: The title compounds were prepared from coldpressed pellets of the elemental components by arcmelting. They crystallize with the orthorhombic Er2FeC4-type structure, which was refined from X-ray data of an Er2MnC4 single crystal: Ibam, a = 760.4(1)pm, b = 937.1(1)pm, c = 504.0(1)pm, R = 0.021 for 524 structure factors and 17 variable parameters. Y2MnC4 does not become superconducting down to 1.7 K. Chemical bonding in these compounds is briefly discussed.
