Notes: Transport, structural, and magnetic properties of c-axis-oriented Y1Ba2Cu3O7−δ thin films grown by off-axis in situ rf sputtering on MgO substrates have been investigated. By varying the substrate surface preparation prior to deposition, films could be grown with systematic improvements in their dc transport and structural properties. At the same time, these films display a systematic decrease in the irreversible magnetization ΔM(H) at all temperatures. Transport and inductive critical current densities in all cases displayed a temperature dependence that could be ascribed to flux creep and/or intragrain Josephson junctions. The irreversible magnetization for the films showed sample size dependence consistent with that of the Bean critical-state model. An anticorrelation between the transport and the magnetization critical current densities in the films was observed, which can be understood in terms of changes in the density of pinning sites as a function of substrate preparation.

Notes: Superconducting Y1Ba2Cu3O7−δ thin films have been fabricated in situ by on-axis rf reactive magnetron sputtering from a single stoichiometric 1-2-3 target. By using high total sputtering pressures ((approximately-greater-than)400 mTorr) and low oxygen pressures (≤10 mTorr), negative ion resputtering is almost eliminated and high quality oriented films on (100)MgO are realized with excellent reproducibility. Such films display zero resistance Tc's as high as 88 K with transition widths ΔTc (90%–10%) of about 2 K, residual resistivity ratios R(300 K)/R(100 K) of 2.5, and critical current densities greater than 106 A/cm2 at 14 K.

Notes: Using an in situ x-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, the electric-field induced change in the d-spacings Δd/d of the individual microcrystals or "crystallographic" strain is measured on lead magnesium niobate—lead titanate—barium titanate electrostrictive ceramics of composition 0.970(0.900PMN−0.100PT)−0.030BT from zero field to saturation. This crystallographic strain is then compared to the bulk longitudinal strain as measured by Δl/l using a photonic sensor. The crystallographic electric-field induced strain behavior for virgin samples could be fit to a constitutive model, where the induced strain is proportional to the square of the polarization with an electrostrictive coefficient Q determined to be 1.4 (×106 cm4/C2). Attempts to fit the bulk strain behavior on the same sample required lower values of the electrostrictive coefficient Q∼1, and generally yielded worse fits where the model predicted greater than the observed strain values at low electric fields. Subsequent in situ XRD measurements on previously electric-field cycled samples yielded much lower crystallographic strain values with a significantly different electric field dependence. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In situ x-ray diffraction studies were performed on the PLSnZT antiferroelectric–ferroelectric phase switching ceramic and polycrystalline powder. The crystallography of both the antiferroelectic and electric-field-induced ferroelectric phases were determined for the approximate composition of Pb0.98La0.02(Zr0.55Sn0.33Ti0.12)0.995O3. A preferred antiferroelectric domain structure has been identified and possible mechanisms responsible for the domain structure are presented. A single tetragonal phase has been identified for the room temperature zero-field antiferroelectric material with unit cell dimensions a=4.107 A(ring) and c=4.081 A(ring). An electric field-induced structure developing at the antiferroelectric–ferroelectric switching field has also been observed and determined to be of rhombohedral symmetry with a=4.105 A(ring) and θ=89.85° indicating a volume increase of 0.49% for the tetragonal–rhombohedral transition. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract One of the four quadrupole doublets (A, B, C, and D) observed in Mössbauer spectra of orthorhombic (Y or RE)1Ba2(Cu1-xFex)307-δ(δ≈0) samples is identified with Fe dopant replacing a Cu site in twin planes. The site in question, labelled as D, is characterized by a quadrupole splitting ΔD in the range 1.6±0.1 mm/s. The D-site intensity is found to approach zero when the 1-2-3, material is driven tetragonal, either upon oxygen desorption, upon oxygen loading, or upon increasing the Fe-dopant concentration.

Notes: Summary There now exists a gap in the humanistic and professional care of the newborn defective child and his family—a gap which is so vital that it further adds to the debilitation of the infant and increases force behind the statement, “The family with a handicapped child is a handicapped family.” The minister in the community is the logical person by reasons of training, sphere of call, and availability to fill this void and assist parents through this most difficult shock or mourning period. In times of death or severe illness, the family minister does not wait to be called by the family before showing his, and the church's, concern. Neither should he wait in the case of defective birth, for no longer is this a subject to be hidden in closets while parents suffer in agonized self-accusation. The very first days are crucial ones, and the minister that makes himself available to the parents during that time in a supportive, listening post role will produce more positive results than will many sessions of counseling in the later years of that infant's childhood.

Notes: Abstract The interface of Al-C fibre composite was modified by coating a silver layer on the surface of carbon fibres prior to making composites, in an attempt to improve the wettability between molten aluminium and carbon fibres during infiltration. An electroless plating technique was adopted and perfected to provide a homogeneous silver coating on the carbon fibre surface. Al-C fibre composites were prepared using a liquid infiltration technique in a vacuum. It was found that silver coating promoted the wetting between aluminium and carbon fibres, particularly with polyacrylonitrile-base carbon fibres. However, due to rapid dissolution of silver in molten aluminium, it was believed that the improved infiltration was not due to the wetting behaviour between molten aluminium and silver. The cleaning of the fibre surface and the preservation of the cleaned carbon surface with silver coating was considered to be the prime reason for the improved wettability. Interfacial reactions between aluminium and carbon fibres were observed. Amorphous carbon was found to react more with aluminium than graphitic carbon. This is believed to be because of the inertness of the graphitic basal planes.

Notes: Abstract An experimental evaluation was conducted at NASA Lewis Research Center to compare and contrast the performance of a newly developed resistance strain gage, the PdCr temperature-compensated wire strain gage, to that of a conventional high-temperature extensometry. The evaluation of the two strain measurement systems was conducted through the application of various thermal and mechanical loading spectra using a high-temperature thermomechanical uniaxial testing system equipped with quartz lamp heating. The purpose of the testing was not only to compare and contrast the two strain sensors but also to investigate the applicability of the PdCr strain gage to the testing environment typically employed when characterizing the high-temperature mechanical behavior of structural materials. Strain measurement capabilities to 800°C were investigated with a nickel base superalloy IN100 substrate material, and application to titanium matrix composite (TMC) materials was examined with the SCS-6/Ti-15-3 [0]8 system. PdCr strain gages installed by three attachment techniques—namely, flame spraying, spot welding and rapid infrared joining—were investigated.
