Notizen: Summary An increase in light scattering intensity was observed throughout the curing of diepoxides with amines. The value of such an increase depends on the chemical structure of the reagents and on the curing temperature. This phenomenon was explained by polycondensation reaction peculiarities and the glass state transition nature.

Notizen: Abstract Defect formation in epoxies due to the chemical shrinkage was observed during isothermal cure over a wide cure temperature range. The observed defects were cohesive cracks and adhesional failures. The influence of the mutual position of the gel and the glass transition points on shrinkage-defect formation was examined. The different types of the cohesive defects can arise in the curing system in both the rubbery and glassy state. The type of defect formed was found to be determined by the relaxational state of the polymer during defect formation. The dependence of the glass transition temperature upon the degree of polymerization is reported for the epoxy/amine polymer system investigated. Experimental parameters of polymer resistance to chemical shrinkage cracking were measured for all investigated cure temperatures.

Notizen: Abstract Formation of shrinkage defects during isothermal curing of network polymers is considered. The cure was carried out under conditions of adhesive interaction of the polymer matrix with the rigid filler present in the composite. The dependence of the relative mean distance between cohesive defects on the tube diameter in the tube model developed earlier was investigated over more than two orders of magnitude of tube diameters. This distance was found to be constant in the range considered. A similar process of shrinkage defect formation was observed for a plate model.

Notizen: Conclusions 1. The equilibrium of the exchange of triethyloxonium hexachloroantimonate with butyl acetate in nitrobenzene solution was investigated in the temperature interval 10–70°C. 2. The exchange reaction is complex, but the basic direction of the exchange reaction consists of transalkylation of the reagents. As a result of kinetic hindrances at low temperatures, 30°C, the exchange reaction does not take place in all possible directions. 3. The values of the equilibrium constants were estimated and the thermal effect was determined for the transalkylation reaction. 4. Small differences in the heats of formation of the C-O bond in the molecules of esters and oxonium salts with various lengths of the alkyl radical produce substantial changes in the state of equilibrium in exchange reactions.

Notizen: The mechanical and optical behavior in the dry and swollen states of loosely crosslinked epoxy networks prepared from the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, phenylglycidyl ether, and 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane was investigated, and the weight fraction of sol in the networks was determined. The crosslinking density was controlled by an excess of diamine and by the fraction of monoepoxide. The reaction proceeded to almost full conversion of epoxy groups. With increasing content of monoepoxide or with increasing excess of diamine, the main transition region is shifted to lower temperatures. The dependence of the viscoelastic modulus on temperature and the optical behavior indicate that the networks are homogeneous. In all cases, the sol fraction is adequately described by the theory of branching processes (cf. Part I). The equilibrium modulus related to the dry state is the same irrespective of whether it is obtained by measurements in the dry or swollen state. The mechanical behavior in the rubbery state can be described by the theory of phantom networks with fully suppressed fluctuations of crosslinking (front factor A = 1) or by the theory of phantom networks with fully released fluctuations of crosslinks (front factor) A = fe-2/fe] and contribution of trapped entanglements of the Langley-Graessley type (cf. Part I). In the analysis of the equilibrium behavior, it is advantegeous to use the plot of superimposed dependences of Ge on the gel fraction, which considerably reduces the effect of experimental inaccuracy in determination of composition and degree of conversion.
