    Notes: Amorphous Fe-Ni-Zr alloys in the "as quenched'' and irradiated state have been studied with 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and ac and dc susceptibility. Samples were irradiated by 14-MeV neutrons at room temperature to fluences of ≈1017 ns/cm2 corresponding to a dpa of 3×10−4 at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory RTNS-II facility. Two samples (Fe89.7Ni0.3Zr10 and Fe70Ni20Zr10) "as quenched'' and irradiated, have been studied between room temperature and ≈4 K. ac susceptibility shows reentrant magnetic behavior for both alloys. Temperature hysteresis (no applied fields) is observed initially in the Mössbauer spectra for both alloys, "as quenched'' and irradiated. It decreases and virtually disappears after a few thermal cycles between 20 K and room temperature. Relaxation effects are present in the magnetic hyperfine spectra of both alloys, "as quenched'' and irradiated. The usually assumed proportionality between the magnetic hyperfine splitting and the magnetization is probably not valid for these alloys.

    Notes: The effect of thermal annealing and high flux neutron irradiation on the ac susceptibility of Cu-Ni alloys of composition 40, 50, and 60 at. % Ni have been studied. In this compositional region the short-range order and cluster changes introduced by the annealing and irradiation can greatly effect the magnetic state of the Cu-Ni system. Neutron diffraction studies on the Cu-Ni system have indicated the possibility of a miscibility gap forming in this system. The ac susceptibility of samples quenched from high temperature (900 °C), annealed at low temperature (350 °C), or irradiated at the LLNL, RTNS-II 14-MeV neutron source were measured as a function of temperature. The quenched 60 at. % Ni alloy exhibited a ferromagnetic transition near 195 °K that remained unchanged under neutron irradiation. The low-temperature annealed sample gave a transition occurring over a wider temperature range. The quenched 50 at. % Ni alloy exhibits a ferromagnetic transition at a lower temperature with a χ(T) curve that is peaked near 40 °K. The thermally annealed and irradiated sample exhibits a greatly broadened χ(T) curve. The quenched 40 at. % Ni alloy gives a paramagnetic behavior. The low-temperature annealed sample gives a χ(T) curve having a broad plateau that decreases at low temperatures. This behavior is suggestive of a ferromagnetic to spin-glass transition. The irradiated sample gives a χ(T) curve having a peak indicating a spin-glass transition at 2.4 °K.

    Notes: Anatomical features of the ductus venosus in 84 neonatal dogs are described. The ductus venosus was a straight conduit 1–3 mm wide and 4–12 mm long in pups with a crown-rump length of 80–200 mm. It arose from the left main portal vein branch opposite the umbilical vein, passed between the left lateral liver lobe and the papillary process of the caudate lobe, and terminated in the dorsal aspect of the proximal part of the left hepatic vein. The left hepatic vein was dilated at this point. There was no variation in the location of the ductus venosus in the animals studied.

    Notes: Abstract A series of powdered and oriented single crystals of riebeckite-arfvedsonite have been examined with the Mössbauer technique above and below the magnetic ordering temperatures. Using fitted spectra that result in essentially similar quadrupole pairs, site occupancies were determined for 5 samples. Fitted spectra of oriented single crystals are associated with inequal pairs. The quadrupole splitting and isomer shifts are indistinguishable from those of the powdered samples. For the purpose of determining site occupancy paramagnetic spectra at L.N. temperatures appear to have little advantage over those obtained at room temperatures. The use of cryogenics to obtain magnetic hyperfine splitting increases experimental times several fold; however we conclude that in most cases the additional information and greater accuracy of Fe+2/Fe+3 warrants the additional effort. Magnetic order detected at cryogenic temperatures has an overall antiferromagnetic character. The orientation of the magnetic moment for Fe+3 is not parallel to a principal crystallographic axis, and its orientation near 〈316〉 suggests that there is magnetic coupling between the cation ribbons containing the octahedrally coordinated iron. The magnetic behavior can be interpreted satisfactorily using the Ising model developed for two dimensional lattices and extended to loosely coupled chains.

    Notes: Conclusions The results of our analysis strongly support our two Fe environment hypothesis. The critical concentration at about 12 at.% suggests that the dependence of H(0,x) on x undergoes a fundamental change at this concentration. Furthermore, the so-called critical concentration at about 17 at.% apparently has little to do with any fundamental alloy property. Rather, it reflects the 12 at.% critical composition when properties are analyzed in terms of the average rather than the local Fe concentration. The two Fe environments appear to have differing configurations.

    Notes: Abstract We have demonstrated the feasibility of determining isotope ratios in very small samples of osmium by deuteron activation in the Livermore Tandem Van de Graaff accelerator. The method involves determination of cross-section ratios by using several osmium isotope mixtures carefully prepared from electromagnetically-enriched osmium isotopes. The accuracy of this method was checked by a determination of the isotope ratios in naturally-occurring osmium. Our analysis demonstrated that an osmium specimen removed from a sample of commercial grade perrhenic acid contained only 0.4% natural osmium, the rest being radiogenic187Os.

    Notes: Abstract The magnetic properties of two amorphous Fe−Ni−Zr alloys, Fe89.7Ni0.03Zr10 and Fe70Ni20Zr10, both in the “as cast” and neutron irradiated states were investigated by Mössbauer spectroscopy and dc magnetic susceptibility measurements. The upper magnetic ordering temperatures of Fe89.7Ni0.03Zr10 are 232K and 246K for the “as cast” and irradiated samples, respectively. The magnetic ordering temperature for Fe70Ni20Zr10 was about 478K for both the “as cast” and irradiated samples. Both compositions yield magnetic hyperfine spectra, which show a considerable relaxation effect that must be explicitly considered in the calculation of the average local Fe moments. When this is done, these values derived from Mössbauer spectra are in good agreement with the dc susceptibility values. The effects of neutron irradiation on the magnetic properties of these alloys are small.

    Notes: The mass spectra of a number of 2-trifluoromethyl-3-oxazol-5-ones, prepared from protein amino acids, have been recorded. The compounds have been separated by gas chromatography using binary column techniques. Analysis of the mass spectra has identified major fragmentation processes which, directly or indirectly, yield the nature of the amino acid sidechain. These fragmentations would be considered advantageous in the identification of unknown α-amino acids.
