    Notes: Hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NH2OH-HCl) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) have been used in the past for selective dissolution of manganese oxide minerals. The methods reported, however, give poor recoveries. We tried to improve the methods in this respect. By stoichiometry, incomplete dissolution of Mn oxides is due to the lack of NH2OH-HCl added or to the lack of acid added in the case of H2O2 treatment. By increasing the amount of solution for a given amount of solid in the case of NH2OH-HCl and by increasing the acid concentration in the case of H2O2 treatment, we obtained rapid and complete dissolution of synthetic Mn oxides. The dissolution of natural samples, however, was slower than that of synthetic ones. Based on the results obtained, the improved methods are: (i) 0.1 m NH2OH-HCl, non-acidified, 2 hours' stirring, and 1 g solid in 2 litres solution; (ii) 30% H2O2 in 0.5 m nitric acid, 0.5 hours' stirring, and 1 g solid in 1 litre solution. The improved methods achieved almost complete release of manganese from samples without decreasing the selectivity of dissolution.

    Notes: The relation between physical and mechanical responses and the structure of clay has been studied. Deformation in response to mechanical stress was measured on samples of Wyoming mont-morillonite and Saint Austell kaolinite in solutions of NaCl (0·005; 0·05; 0·5 and 5 M). Salt concentration was expressed in terms of osmotic potential of water and loading in terms of envelope pressure potential of water, and deformation was measured precisely under small mechanical stress. During shrinking and swelling, deformation was small and reversible, and consolidation was related to the largest mechanical stress applied previously in its history. The arrangement of the clay at equilibrium depends foremost on the type of clay mineral and physico-chemical properties of the liquid phase. For Na-montmorillonite suspensions, transition between gels with tactoids and rigid media with quasicrystals is abrupt and occurs at a potential of about −2000 J kg−1, whether the stress is osmotic or mechanical. Swelling indexes obtained under osmotic and mechanical stress are of the same order of magnitude. Deformation of smectite results from modifications of interassemblage and intra-assemblage organization.

    Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectroscopy is used to characterize a Green Rust as a natural mineral for the first time. Samples are taken from a hydromorphic soil under the forest at Fougères (Brittany, France) during spring season. Spectra are compared with those of synthetic Green Rusts (GRs), i.e. hydroxy-chloride, -sulphate, -carbonate and display one ferric and one or two ferrous sites. Fe(II)/Fe(III) abundances ratio cannot be attributed definitely to one of those stoichiometric compounds. Therefore, the counter-anion species cannot be specified even though hyperfine parameters perfectly match values of synthetic samples. The Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio obtained from the Mössbauer spectra decreases with sampling depth. The "fougerite" originates likely from the reduction of deeper Fe(III)-mineral species by anoxic waterlogging.
