    Notes: The rate coefficients for quenching of metastable NH(a 1Δ) by N2, H2, HF, F2, HNCO, NH3, N2H4, and He were measured. The 193 nm ArF pulsed laser photolysis of HNCO, NH3, and N2H4 produced NH(a 1Δ). Its lifetime was measured as a function of quenching species concentration by an LIF technique which made use of the a 1Δ→c 1π transition near 325 nm.

    Notes: The emission spectrum of a molecular beam of NaI has been measured following excitation by the 248 nm KrF line of an excimer laser. The fluorescence structure, and the lifetime (17±2 ns), indicate the presence of a bound upper state not previously characterized. We identify this state as correlating with Na(3 2P)+I(5 2P3/2) atoms. Through numerical simulation using a Morse function representation for the upper state, we have determined approximate values for the well depth of 530±260 cm−1, well breadth of ∼1.8 A(ring)−1, and equilibrium separation of ∼3.4 A(ring) for this state. As a consequence of the breadth of this weakly bound excited state the bound→bound line spectrum spans a broad spectral range (87% of the ground state well depth) entirely comparable with spectra attributed to free→bound emission.

    Notes: Using a calibrated laser induced fluorescence method employing the Herman infrared band system in the nitrogen atom afterglow and in a new short-lived nitrogen afterglow it is demonstrated that less than 4×107 cm−3 N2(A' 5Σ) are present. It is concluded that if the nitrogen atoms statistically expected to recombine into the 5Σ state do so then the nitrogen quenching rate constant of the 5Σ state must be greater than 1×10−11 cm3 s−1. Also, the 5Σ state is not the precursor to the short lived N2 afterglow recently described by Piper [J. Chem. Phys. 88, 6911, 232 (1988)].

    Notes: Abstract Strong UV emission has been observed in the reactions of XeF2+SiH4+F2 and XeF2+B2H6+F2. The emission spectra have been identified with the B 2Σ→X 2Σ transition of XeF. Possible mechanisms of XeF(B) production are discussed.
