    Notes: Free amino acids and indoles were measured by HPLC in single pineal glands of 5-, 10-and 20-day-old rats sacrificed during mid-light and mid-dark at each age. Melatonin was detectable in neonates (5-day-old), but day vs night differences in indole constituents did not occur until 10 days of age. Free amino acid steady state levels were high in neonates and there was a tendency for reversal of day vs night differences coinciding with the onset of circadian rhythmicity in indole biosynthesis. High correlations (r 〉 0.85) existed for taurine vs. glutamate in individual glands regardless of age and time of sacrifice. These findings suggest that taurine and glutamate are biochemically interrelated and that developmental changes in amino acid metabolic pools reflect functional innervation of the gland.

    Notes: Abstract The absorption of three new slow-release fertilizers (Coron, N-Sure and Nitrazine) by perennial ryegrass turf was compared to uptake of NO 3 - and urea using a nutrient solution culture system. Each source of nitrogen was supplied to turf cultures at a rate equivalent to 21 kg N ha−1 every five days during a twenty day experimental period. Nitrate and urea produced the most growth, while growth on Coron and N-Sure was reduced 30%. Growth on Nitrazine-N was further reduced to only 40% of that on NO 3 - and urea. Coron and N-Sure were absorbed relatively rapidly during the first 24 hour period, with cumulative absorption over the five day period amounting to approximately 80% of the total supplied. Nitrazine-N was absorbed more slowly, with only 40% of the N absorbed after five days. Perennial ryegrass was apparently capable of metabolizing both Coron and N-Sure. The slow-release N component of Nitrazine (melamine) was inhibitory to photosynthesis, and at higher solution concentrations, was toxic to the turf.

    Notes: Abstract Competition for available water resources in both arid and semi-arid locations has led to greater scrutiny of turfgrass irrigation. Irrigation management strategies, including deficit irrigation, need further investigation. The objective of this research was to determine the physiological response of bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) to prolonged water deficits under saline conditions. Bermudagrass was grown in large columns packed with three different soil types (sandy loam, silt loam and clay). Synthesized saline irrigation water was applied at three different salinity levels (1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 dS/m). Two previous experiments that were conducted with these columns over a 3.5 year period led to differential profile salinization in all 27 columns. At the end of this 3.5 year period, all irrigations were terminated and plant growth and water status were monitored over a 95 day dry-down period. Midday stomatal conductance, leaf water potential, canopy temperature, soil water in storage and stolon elongation were measured over the experimental period. On day 95, above ground tissue was harvested for dry weight and elemental tissue analysis. Midday stomatal conductance decreased around day 30 in all columns regardless of soil salinity. This decrease was not associated with a threshold leaf water potential, as midday leaf water potentials remained constant over a 60 day period. Stolon elongation also ceased before any deviation in the midday leaf water potential occurred. A concomitant reduction in evapo ranspiration was not associated with the measured decrease in stomatal conductance. This would suggest that bermudagrass may have regulated stomatal activity to compensate for lower conductances during periods of greater stress and/or that measured midday stomatal conductances cannot always be directly coupled to extended time evapotranspiration measurements.

    Notes: This study describes intercellular bridges in the ovaries of neonatal gerbils. Electron microscopy has revealed the presence of true intercellular bridges, connecting oogonia or oocytes, in ovaries of newborn gerbils. The cytoplasm of the intercellular channels is similar to that of the connected cells, with mitochondria, smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, and free ribosomes present. Lysosomes are also occasionally present in the intercellular bridges and they may be involved in early waves of oocyte atresia. An electrondense substance, 350-500 Å thick, is located immediately beneath the unit membrane of the intercellular bridges. Accumulation of electron-dense material increases the thickness of the walls of the intercellular bridges, supporting and maintaining the patency of the channels. It is suggested that the intercellular channels probably allow the interchange of nutrients, organelles, and possibly regulatory materials as well.
