    Notes: Effective diffusivities and adsorption equilibrium constants of methanol, ethanol and 2-methyl-2-butene (2M2B), in Amberlyst 15, were evaluated from batch adsorption experiments. Moment expressions derived for different models involving diffusion resistances in the macropores and within the gel-like micrograins were used for the evaluation of effective diffusion coefficients. Contribution of surface diffusion to diffusion flux within the macropores was found to be quite significant. Also, it was found that diffusion resistance in liquid filled macropores was much more significant than diffusion resistance within the gel-like micrograins of Amberlyst 15., for methanol, ethanol and 2M2B.

    Notes: 1. Hypertension and renal failure are the two most common and severe complications due to cyclosporine A (CsA) therapy after transplantation. To determine whether an in vivo treatment with pentoxifylline (PTX) can prevent the toxic effects of CsA, three groups of rats were studied.2. The first group of rats (n = 11) received daily injections of CsA (15 mg/kg, i.m.) and PTX (45 mg/kg, i.p., b.i.d.), the second group of rats in= 11) was treated with CsA only and the third group of rats (n = 11) served as the control group (vehicle treatment).3. Whole blood CsA levels were similar in CsA + PTX and CsA alone groups. Although CsA treatment significantly increased mean arterial blood pressure (110.00 ± 2.48 nunHg; P〈0.01), there was no significant increase in the PTX co-treated group (104.09 ± 2.96 mm Hg) compared with initial values. In both the CsA alone and CsA + PTX groups the heart rate (365.45 ± 6.62 and 357.27 ± 7.23 b.p.m., respectively; P 〈 0.05) were found to be significantly higher than initial values. Serum creatinine levels increased significantly in the CsA alone group (1.40 ± 0.11 mg/dL; P 〈 0.01) compared with control values (0.81 ± 0.04 mg/dL). This increase was prevented by co-treatment with PTX (serum creatinine 1.11 ± 0.10 mg/dL; P 〈 0.05). Total [99mTcl-DTPA percentage renal uptake, as an index of glomerular filtration rate (GFR), was markedly and significantly lower in the CsA alone group (10.01 ± 0.79%; P 〈 0.01) than in the control group (18.19 ± 132%). Pentoxifylline co-treatment attenuated this decrease compared with GFR in the CsA alone group (13.00 ± 0.75%; P 〈 0.01).4. These results suggest that the co-administration of PTX with CsA may prevent the dose-limiting toxic effects of CsA therapy.

    Notes: The herbicidal effect of olive processing wastes (OPW) on some weed species in wheat, maize and sunflower was investigated in the Aegean region of Turkey. In trials with maize and sunflower, OPW was applied as an air-dried solid form at 3 and 4.5 kg m−2. It provided an effectiveness level on Portulaca oleracea of 63–98%. In trials with wheat, OPW was applied as solid and liquid forms, each at two different doses, namely 4.5 and 6 kg m−2 (solid), and 5 and 10 L m−2 (liquid). Solid OPW provided a reduction in total weed coverage of 75% and 81% at doses of 4.5 and 6 kg m−2, respectively. The weed coverage reduction by liquid OPW was 39% and 62% with 5 and 10 L m−2, respectively. Apart from 12–26% reduction of the number of germinating seeds, OPW showed no toxic effects on maize and sunflower. Wheat was affected in the initial stages but no adverse effect was detected at harvest. It can be concluded that the herbicidal effect of OPW may be considered as an alternative to chemical weed control in some important summer crops (maize and sunflower) and for most of the weeds in winter wheat.

    Notes: Abstract  This second part of a systematic study of the properties of crosslinked-oriented gelatin involves the effects of orientation and water content on the glass transition temperature T g and on the melting behavior. The samples were the same as those in the preceding study, and their transition temperatures were determined by both differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The crosslinked gelatin which had been room-conditioned showed two transition temperatures: the lower one was attributed to T g of the water-plasticized gelatin, and the higher one was interpreted as T g of dried gelatin superimposed by melting. A rather unusual situation arose because of the fact that the T g and melting temperatures T m (217 and 230 °C, respectively) are so similar. Using water as plasticizer not only decreases T g but produces imperfect crystallites which melt below the T g of the system. The presence of the amorphous phase in the glassy state would presumably make it essentially impossible to define a melting point or crystallization temperature in the normal manner, as an equilibrium between crystalline and amorphous phases.

    Notes: Abstract This study is an extension of previous work on cellulosics [(1994)Colloid Polym Sci 272: 284, 393] that showed that unusually good mechanical properties can be obtained by drying a swollen network of semirigid chains in a state of strain. This novel approach is applied in this investigation to gelatin, because of its attractive environmental characteristics but poor mechanical properties in the unmodified form. Since drawing of non-crosslinked gelatin is not practical, crosslinking by formaldehyde was used, followed by swelling, drawing and drying at fixed length. Mechanical tests were performed in static and dynamic modes. In this way improvements of Young's modulusE, and stress at breakσ b were determined as a function of gelatin concentration during drying. An increase inE andσ b up to 2–3 times, and in the dynamic modulusE′ up to 6 times, was obtained when the draw ratio λ reached 4–5, after whichE, E′, andσ b were found to decrease. Such behavior is explained by the highest orientation being achieved at λ=4–5, as proved by x-ray analysis. At λ=10–20 the orientation is lost due to relaxation of chain segments, which is preceded by partial destroying of the network structure (chemical and physical), possibly via chain scission, but probably mostly by the pulling out of chains from crystallites. In any case, the mechanical properties become poor again. The improvements reported above were referred to the undrawn but crosslinked gelatin. Compared to the starting isotropic non-crosslinked material, the improvement is slightly higher. The observation that the improvements are less than those obtained for the cellulosics is explained by the coexistence of interpenetrating chemical and physical networks, which is typical of gelatin. This structural feature drastically reduces the orientability of the chains and the improvements that can be expected in the mechanical properties.
