Notes: Summary We have studied the maturation of non-pyramidal cells in layers II–VI of the visual cortex of albino rats from birth to maturity, using Golgi-Cox and rapid Golgi preparations. At birth, non-pyramidall cells are sparse, immature and concentrated in the deep part of the cortical plate: their number increases towards the end of the first week but they remain sparse and immature in the upper part of the cortical plate. During the second postnatal week, the number, size and extent of dendritic and axonal branching of these cells undergo considerable increases and the cells become conspicuous in layer IV and apparent in the supragranular layers: this “growth spurt’ occurs just after (and may be related to) the arrival and establishment in the cortex during the second half of the first postnatal week, of extrinsic afferents. During the third postnatal week, most of the cells complete their maturation. At the end of this week, the number of spinous cells is greater and the spine density of some cells is higher than in the adult, falling to adult values during the fourth postnatal week. It is noteworthy that the non-pyramidal cells appear to reach maturity at about the same time in all the layers studied, and at the same time as the pyramidal cells with which they are associated. These observations are not in accord with the prevalent view that non-pyramidal cells complete their differentiation much later than pyramidal cells.

Notes: Summary The development of sarcoma within a glioblastoma is a well recognised complication: in the majority of cases it is a fibro-sarcoma originating in the tissues of the proliferating hyperplastic blood vessels. In the case described here the tumour is a rhabdomyosarcoma, apparently derived from abnormal prolific vascular mesenchyme. Only one comparable example has been recorded previously.

Notes: Abstract Midwater fishes were sampled at night to a depth of 400 m in oceanic waters east of Tasmania, Australia, in May/June of 1992, 1993 and 1994. We examined whether there were differences in the distribution and density of these fishes in relation to the subtropical convergence (STC) separating East Australia Current (EAC) water from subantarctic water (SAW) to the south. A total of 23999 fishes from 107 taxa and 43 families were identified. Four new records were identified from the study area. Myctophids and stomiatoids were the main fish taxa captured. We found no evidence of increased density of the combined fish catch in any particular area. However, differences between areas in the density of individual species were noted, although no species was confined to any one area. Ceratoscopelus warmingi, Lobianchia dofleini and Vinciguerria spp. were most abundant in the EAC, whereas Lampichthys procerus was most abundant in the SAW. Only Diaphus danae was found in significantly higher numbers in the STC. Multivariate analysis revealed that community structure in the EAC was significantly different from that of the SAW but not from the STC. Further, when separated by depth, the shallow EAC group was significantly different in all group comparisons bar that with the shallow STC. Our data indicated that the thin EAC layer above 200 m could be distinguished by its fauna from the SAW. However, we could not detect a separate community in the STC. We conclude, therefore, that the STC is not an area of increased micronekton abundance, nor does it contain a distinct community, during the Australian autumn/winter.

Notes: L and width 2w, then by a selection of viewing window is meant a choice of w, with the intent being to search for optimal viewing windows, with the goal in mind of improving variances of estimators of population density, reducing sampling effort, while maintaining the property of unbiasedness. The notions of increasing window sensitivity (IWS) and decreasing window sensitivity (DWS) are introduced, and a method of deriving confidence intervals is discussed.

Notes: Summary Sixty-two consecutive CT-directed stereotactic biopsies were studied retrospectively to determine the value of the per-operative smear examination. Overall, in 69% of cases the immediate smear result agreed with the definitive histology. However, a smear diagnosis of malignant glioma was more reliable than that of metastasis (with 100% and 55% aggreement with the final result respectively). In those cases where the final histological diagnosis was that of malignant glioma, immediate smear preparations taken from the hypodense centre were found to be more reliable than those taken from the enhancing edge.

Notes: Summary Advances in neurological imaging may have increased the diagnostic accuracy and the detection rate of intrinsic brain stem lesions, but a histological diagnosis is still an essential requirement for rational and appropriate management. Open exploration allows biopsy and resection in cases where an exophytic component is present. The surgical inaccessibility and the resultant morbidity of these approaches, however, associated with a low diagnostic yield in cases with no visible surface abnormality, are important limiting factors. A series of 45 brain stem lesions stereotactically approached with CT or MRI guidance is presented. A transcortical frontal pre-coronal trajectory was used in all of them. Haematoma was preoperatively diagnosed in 10 cases and the procedure was for therapeutic aspiration. Of 35 cases where the diagnosis was uncertain, although intrinsic tumour was suspected, positive results were obtained in 33, while unexpected findings of granuloma, lymphoma, angioma, leucoencephalopathy, vasculitis and radiation necrosis were found in over 10% of the cases. There were no operative deaths and the morbidity was low. In no case was there a permanent neurological deterioration directly related to the procedure, although there was a transient deterioration in two patients and one patient required early reaspiration of a haematoma. Image directed stereotactic approaches to brain stem lesions can combine a high degree of accuracy (offering positive histological diagnoses) with a low operative morbidity. MRI directed biopsies can complement CT guided ones thus increasing the number of suitable cases and improving the success rate. The frontal precoronal transcortical trajectory provides safe access to the majority of the brain stem targets.

Notes: The gallium complexes were produced in pulsed molecular beams and studied with zero electron kinetic energy (ZEKE) photoelectron spectroscopy. Intermolecular vibrational frequencies and adiabatic ionization potentials (IPs) were obtained from ZEKE spectra. Ground electronic states were identified by combining the ZEKE spectra with quantum chemical and Franck–Condon calculations. Ga–NH3 has an IP of 40 135 cm−1 and metal-ligand stretching frequencies of 270 cm−1 (ωs+) in the ion and 161 cm−1 (νs) in the neutral. The IP of Ga–NH2CH3 is 39 330 cm−1, and the vibrational frequencies are 93 cm−1 (νb) for the Ga–N–C bending, 124 cm−1 (ωb+) for the Ga+–N–C bending, and 299 cm−1 (ωs+) for the Ga+–N stretching. The strength of the gallium–methylamine binding is stronger than that of the gallium–ammonia. The ground state of Ga–NH3 is 2A′(Cs) and that of Ga+–NH3 is 1A1(C3v). In contrast, Ga–NH2CH3 has two doublets, 2A′ and 2A″(Cs), with virtually the same energies, whereas Ga+–NH2CH3 has a 1A′(Cs) ground state. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Utilization of storage lipids and storage proteins by non-feeding north-west Atlantic herring was assessed under conditions of: (1) concurrent gonad maturation and overwintering periods with differing rates of gonad development for males and females (spring-spawncrs); (2) overwintering, reproductively dormant and spent males and females (autumn-spawners); and (3) approximately equivalent rates of gonad development during late summer for males and females (autumn-spawners). Storage lipids were depleted by all non-feeding fish but storage proteins were depleted only by herring with measurable gonad development during the observation period independently of season (female spring-spawners, maturing male and female autumn-spawners). The analyses indicate that storage lipids sustain routine and active metabolism while storage proteins are utilized to develop gonad. Therefore, the relative investment into reproduction versus routine and active metabolism can be evaluated separately for non-feeding herring using readily obtainable tissue proximate composition data.

Notes: Summary Mothers of 45 children with a liver disease (biliary atresia) completed a questionnaire concerned with their child's health status and psychological adjustment. Emotional and behavioural problems were found to be common; 46% of children under 5 and 43% over 5 years of age scored above the cut-off on standardized measures of adjustment. Maternal mental health difficulties were present in 36% of the sample. The study examined factors that predicted child adjustment, results indicating that maternal perceptions of severity accounted for 40% of the variance in children's psychological adjustment. Neither maternal mental health, nor objective parameters of the child's health status contributed significantly to child adjustment. The findings are discussed in terms of Wallander's model of adaptation to chronic disease and the practical implications for clinical practice are discussed.

Notes: We modified a Penlon Nuffield 200 for use in a monoplace hyperbaric oxygen chamber by feeding back the chamber pressure to the reducing valve of the Nuffield 200. This provides a compensating mechanism, allowing the ventilator to deliver adequate tidal volumes at pressures of up to 3 atmospheres. We report the laboratory testing of the ventilator and our experience of ventilating two patients with carbon monoxide poisoning. Although compensation is not complete the modification is adequate for short-term clinical use in patients in whom the airway is compromised but who need hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
