    Notes: Abstract. Ifosfamide is an alkylating agent which has been incorporated into frontline therapy for a number of malignant paediatric tumours. Recent data appears to suggest that tubular dysfunction may result from incorporation of this drug into chemotherapy schedules and that toxicity may be dose related. A detailed investigation of renal function was performed in a group of patients, ranging in age from 8 months to 15.9 years (median 8.6 years) with rhabdomyosarcoma (n=11) and Ewing's sarcoma (n=9) who were currently receiving (n=4) or had completed ifosfamide (n=16) therapy for a mean of 16 months at the time of study. All but one patient demonstrated some degree of renal dysfunction and toxicity did not necessarily appear to be dose related. Implications for incorporation of this agent into future schedules for childhood sarcomas, which can expect to cure more than 60% of such children, must be addressed. The importance of ongoing monitoring is emphasised.

    Notes: The self-diffusivity of Brownian hard spheres in a simple shear flow is studied by numerical simulation. Particle trajectories are calculated by Stokesian dynamics, with an accurate representation of the suspension hydrodynamics that includes both many-body interactions and lubrication. The simulations are of a monolayer of identical spheres as a function of the Péclet number: Pe =γ(overdot)a2/D0, which measures the relative importance of shear and Brownian forces. Here γ(overdot) is the shear rate, a the particle radius, and D0 the diffusion coefficient of a single sphere at infinite dilution. In the absence of shear, using only hydrodynamic interactions, the simulations reproduce the pair-distribution function of the equivalent hard-disk system. Both short- and long-time self-diffusivities are determined as a function of the Péclet number. The results show a clear transition from a Brownian motion dominated regime (Pe〈1) to a hydrodynamically dominated regime (Pe〉10) with a dramatic change in the behavior of the long-time self-diffusivity.

    Notes: The effective reaction rate is calculated for a random array of reactive, stationary spherical traps in a medium containing a highly mobile reactant. Multipole scattering up to the quadrupole level, properly accounting for the conditionally convergent long-range interactions, plus direct addition of exact two-body interactions is employed. It is found that the addition of two-body interactions has a negligible effect on the effective reaction rates computed, in contrast to the case of the effective conductivity. Our results closely match the random walker simulation results of Lee, Kim, Miller, and Torquato [Phys. Rev. B 39, 11833 (1989)] up to 30% trap volume fraction, after which they underpredict the effective reaction rate. To accurately compute the effective reaction rate at high volume fractions, higher order many-body multipole interactions are required.

    Notes: The viscosity of a suspension of spherical Brownian particles is determined by Stokesian dynamics as a function of the Péclet number. Several new aspects concerning the theoretical derivation of the direct contribution of the Brownian motion to the bulk stress are given, along with the results obtained from a simulation of a monolayer. The simulations reproduce the experimental behavior generally observed in dense suspensions, and an explanation of this behavior is given by observing the evolution of the different contributions to the viscosity with shear rate. The shear thinning at low Péclet numbers is due to the disappearance of the direct Brownian contribution to the viscosity; the deformation of the equilibrium microstructure is, however, small. By contrast, at very high Péclet numbers the suspension shear thickens due to the formation of large clusters.
