Abstract The on-line coupling of gas chromatography and isotope ratio mass spectrometry via a pyrolysis interface (GC-pyrolysis-IRMS, GC-P-IRMS) allows the simultaneous determination of δ13C and δ18O values for organic compounds. On the basis of illustrative investigations of vanillin from different origins, the scope and limitations of the new method are discussed.
