Notes: Abstract The flow field and mass transfer from flat plates with chemical surface reaction can be described by means of differential equations. Their solutions have been obtained numerically without any simplifications. This report presents some of the more important results obtained, which give insight into the true transport phenomena. A comprehensive mass transfer law has been developed, that has a wide range of validity. It is in good agreement with all available experimental and theoretical data. The new mass transfer equation includes the special case of boundary layer law besides other special laws that describe mass transfer in limited regions of relevant parameters.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Wärmetransport in Rührgefäßen ist grundsätzlich instationärer Natur.
Notes: Contents Heat transport in a mixing vessel is an unsteady state process. Because of the complexity of velocity and temperature field there are no experimental methods available to investigate the heat transport. Theoretical-numerical methods have to be applied in order to reveal the structure of the unsteady state temperature field and the heat flux. In earlier papers the model adopted for the three-dimensional velocity field, the numerical procedure, and some results obtained have been presented. In a next step the influence of energy dissipation on the structure of the temperature field and heat flux has been investigated.

Notes: Abstract In a two-stage pilot plant substantial degradation of dissolved organic carbon compounds and ammonium has been achieved by an aerobic biological process at an extremely short residence time of the waste water in the bioreactors. This success is due to the application of a new type of bioreactor, called the reciprocating jet bioreactor. The waste water used in the experiments has been supplied by the public sewage plant in Berlin. It originates from a thermal conditioning unit and has an organic load of 12 to 15 kg COD/m3 and an ammonium load of 1.3 to 1.7kg NH 4 + /m3. The organic carbon compounds have been reduced to less than 10% in about 60 to 90 min. The ammonium conversion efficiency has in general been of the order of 85 to 95% at a residence time of the waste water in the bioreactor between 1.5 and 3.5 h.

Notes: Abstract In a comprehensive study batch and continuous production of citric acid has been investigated. Fermentations in the reciprocation-jet-bioreactor (RJBR) have been carried out with the fungi Aspergillus niger. In the present paper only the results of continuous fermentations are presented. The paper discusses the influence of medium composition in the influent, input of biomass and frequency of reciprocating motion on citric acid production.

Notes: Abstract The development and investigation of high-efficiency bioreactors is one of the primary problems bioprocess engineers have to solve. With increasing efficiency of the bioreactor the downstream processes will be much simplified, energy and costs will be substantially reduced. According to fundamental research on the properties of stirred tank bioreactors the following rules for the design of bioreactors should be observed: a) Prevent rotational motion of the biosuspension. b) Generate motion of the biosuspension in the radial and axial direction. c) Prevent fluid flow in big spaces. These design rules are in general observed in the development of high-efficiency bioreactors. A selected group of such bioreactors is described.
