    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Cationicly prepared oligostyrene mixtures can be separated into the individual oligomers (dimers to pentamers) by gelchromatography employing a gel of methylmethacrylate and 2 mole-% ethyleneglykoldimethacrylate. The fractionation can be followed qualitatively by UV-spectroscopy and quantitatively by gaschromatographic analysis of the eluates. — Tristyrenes, tetrastyrenes, and pentastyrenes can be isolated in preparative quantities by the gelchromatographic method from the oligomer mixtures obtained from styrene and dilute sulfuric acid; however, the individual fractions thus obtained are not uniform but consist of isomer mixtures.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Kationisch hergestellte Oligostyrol-Gemische lassen sich gelchromatographisch an einem Gel aus Methylmethacrylat und 2 Mol.-% Äthylenglykoldimethacrylat in die einzelnen Oligomeren (Diniere bis Pentamere) auftrennen. Die Fraktionierung kann qualitativ durch UV-Spektroskopie sowie quantitativ durch Gaschromatographie der Eluate verfolgt werden. Aus den aus Styrol mit verdünnter Schwefelsäure erhaltenen Oligomergemischen lassen sich präparativ-gelchromatographisch Tristyrole, Tetrastyrole und Pentastyrole isolieren, die jedoch nicht einheitlich, sondern Isomerengemische sind.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary From the copolymerization behavior of styrene and divinylbenzene it may be deduced that such copolymers with little divinylbenzene content have a very inhomogeneous network structure; relatively densly crosslinked regions, which are formed during the initial phase of polymerization, are connected via longer crosslink chains. Terpolymers from styrene, p-iodostyrene and small shares of divinylbenzene have similar structures.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Aus dem Copolymerisationsverhalten von Styrol und Divinylbenzol läßt sich ableiten, daß derartige Copolymere mit geringen Divinylbenzolgehalten eine sehr inhomogene Netzstruktur besitzen; verhältnismäßig dicht vernetzte, im Anfang der Polymerisation gebildete Bereiche sind durch längere Netzketten miteinander verbunden. Ähnlich ist der Aufbau von Terpolymeren aus Styrol, p-Jodstyrol und kleinen Anteilen Divinylbenzol.

    Notes: Abstract The decomposition of various symmetric and unsymmetric azo-initiators (1,1′-dichloro-1,1′-diphenyl-1,1′-azoethane, 2,2′-dichloro-2,2′-azopropane, 1,1′-dichloro-1,1′-azocyclohexane, 2,2′-diacetoxy-2,2′-azopropane, 1,1′-diacetoxy-1,1′-diphenyl-1,1′-azoethane, 1,1′-diacetoxy-1,1′-azocyclohexane, 2,2′-dipropionoxy-2,2′-azopropane, 2,2′-dicapronoxy-2,2′-azopropane, 4,4′-dimethyl-1,4′-azobutyrolactone, azoisobutyronitrile, 2-t-butylazo-2′-cyanobutan, 2-t-bytylazo-1′-cyanocyclohexan) in solution was studied in dependence of temperature. Volumetry and differential-scanning-calorimetry (DSC) were used to determine decomposition rates; first order kinetics was found in all cases.

    Notes: Summary With substituted tetraphenylethanes as polymerization initiators, telechelic oligomers of ∝ -methylstyrene were obtained above ceiling temperature, contrary so far to other free radical reactions using e.g. chain transfer agents. In the here investigated system tetraphenylethanes act as initiators and terminating agents. The C-C bond between the last monomer unit of the oligomer and the terminating end group from the initiator can be thermally cleaved at about 50°C which produces free radcials. Thus, these ∝ -methylstyrene oligomers can be applied as initiators of freeradical polymerization, e.g. for styrene or methyl methacrylate.

    Notes: Abstract For further investigation of the relations between the structure and the decomposition of the azoesters of the typePhR 1 R 2CN=CNR 2 R 1 Ph two supplement series (R 1=CH3, C2H5;R 2=substituted acetic acids) were synthesized. Especially information were obtained concerning the reasons for the low temperatures of decomposition of the azoesters of acetic acid. The azoesters of the substituted acetic acids follow a law of first order for the decomposition.

    Notes: Summary The chain transfer constants of various aliphatic compounds in the free radical polymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate have been determined at 60°C. It has been found that some cycloaliphatic compounds show a remarkable chain transfer activity, which can also be of practical interest.
