Transversely annealed amorphous metallic glass ribbons exhibit extremely large magnetoelastic coupling. Consequently, the Young's modulus of this material can be altered by a factor of 10 with the application of a small magnetic field. This effect is exploited to drive a vertically aligned ribbon, clamped at the bottom and free at the end, by buckling the ribbon gravitationally. Periodic, quasiperiodic, intermittent, and chaotic behavior are observed experimentally. A model for the system is also presented.
