    Description / Table of Contents: Summary A 71-year-old woman suffered from pronounced erosion of her nose after soft X-ray therapy (total dose 28 Gy, half dose depth 10.5–11.5 mm). 5 weeks after the end of the irradiation no healing tendency was observed. This unusual clinical course was caused by a simultaneously existing pemphigus vulgaris that worsened after radiotherapy, presumably as a consequence of the release of epidermal antigens. In this case it is improbable that the pemphigus was induced by the radiotherapy, as has been reported on several occasions in the literature. However, this possibility cannot be entirely excluded.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Bei einer 71jährigen Frau trat nach Röntgenweichstrahltherapie an der Nase (Gesamtdosis 28 Gy, Gewebehalbwerttiefe 10,5–11,5 mm) eine ausgeprägte Strahlenerosion auf. Diese zeigte 5 Wochen nach Ende der Bestrahlung noch keine Tendenz zur Abheilung. Ursache dieses ungewöhnlichen Verlaufes war ein gleichzeitig bestehender Pemphigus vulgaris. Dieser hatte sich nach der Strahlentherapie, vermutlich als Folge einer Freisetzung epidermaler Antigene, verschlimmert. Daß der Pemphigus in diesem Fall durch die Bestrahlung ausgelöst wurde – wie mehrfach in der Literatur berichtet – ist unwahrscheinlich, aber nicht sicher auszuschließen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird ein Verfahren zur Bestimmung von Wärmeübergangszahlen vorgestellt, das besonders für Messungen im Dampfturbineninnern geeignet ist. Die Wärmeübergangszahlen werden aus den Temperaturfrequenzgängen der Wandungen erhalten. Zur Bestimmung dieser Frequenzgänge wird der zeitliche Verlauf der Fluidtemperatur mit dem Signal einer Meßstelle korreliert, die dicht unter der Wandoberfläche liegt. Als Testsignal eignet sich die natürliche stochastische Dampftemperaturschwankung, die im Turbineninnern vorhanden ist. Messungen an einer 2 MW-Dampfturbinenanlage zeigten, daß im wichtigen Frequenzbereich 1/s ⩽ ω ⩽ 10/s die Leistungsdichte und die Erhaltungstendenz dieses Signals ausreichend groß ist. Die Erprobung des Verfahrens an einer Teststrecke ergab befriedigende Ergebnisse.
    Notes: Abstract A method for the determination of heat transfer coefficients is described which is particularly suited for measurements inside steam turbine cylinders and buckets. The heat transfer coefficients are derived from the temperature frequency characteristics of the walls. Correlations are made between the time-dependent fluid temperature and the corresponding signal received by a detector just below the wall's surface. The natural stochastic temperature variation within a steam turbine can be used as test signal. Measurements in a 2 Megawatt steam turbine demonstrate, that the signal's power density is sufficiently high and the attenuation low within the important frequency range of 1/s ⩽ ω⩽ 10/s. The experimental verification of the method in a steam tunnel showed good results.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Zur Messung schnell veränderlicher Fluidtemperaturen mit Hilfe von Berührungsthermometern sind im allgemeinen hohe Anströmgeschwindigkeiten der Fühler notwendig, um gute Wärmeübergangsverhältnisse sicherzustellen. Dadurch erhält der Recovery-Faktor dieser Fühler besondere Bedeutung. Haupteinflußparameter sind hier die Reynolds- und die Machzahl. Es wird der Recovery-Faktor eines Mantelthermoelementes von 0,5 mm Durchmesser in Wasserdampfströmung in Abhängigkeit von der Anströmmachzahl und der mit dem Manteldurchmesser gebildeten Reynoldszahl auf experimentellem Weg ermittelt. Untersucht werden die Bereiche 0,4 ⩽ M ⩽ 0,8 und 3000 ⩽ Re ⩽9000. Bei niedrigen Machzahlen und hohen Reynoldszahlen sind die Recovery-Werte klein. Sie steigen bis zu einer Grenz-Machzahl mit wachsender Anströmgeschwindigkeit und bei sinkender Reynoldszahl. Oberhalb dieser Grenze besteht keine Abhängigkeit von der Machzahl. Das Recovery-Verbalten des Fühlers wird entscheidend durch die Ablösezone bestimmt, die an der Fühlerspitze auftritt.
    Notes: Abstract Generally, high flow speeds are required to assure adequate heat transfer conditions in determining rapidly changing fluid temperatures by means of contact thermometers. Consequently, the recovery factor of these temperature gages is of predominant importance with Reynolds- and flow Mach numbers as main influence parameters. In the present study, the recovery factor of an enclosed thermocouple of 0,5 mm diameter is determined in steam as a function of free stream Mach number and Reynolds number based on the tip diameter. The Mach number range 0,4 ⩽ M ⩽ 0,8 and Reynolds numbers 3000 ⩽ Re ⩽ 9000 were considered respectively. It was found that the recovery factor is relatively small with low Mach numbers and high Reynolds numbers. Increasing the Mach number and lowering the Reynolds number yields higher recovery factors. After reaching a limiting value, no effect of the flow speed is observed and the recovery factor remains constant with increasing Mach number. Of major influence is the separation zone at the tip of the thermocouple.

    Notes: Abstract It is shown that, with strong pulsed excitation, the intensity of the exciton recombination band in the fluctuation tail of the density of states in the limit of large times in the presence of traps is described by the asymptote of a solution to the diffusion equation. The critical diffusion index corresponds to a “normal” process in the CdS-Se solid solution and to “anomalous” diffusion in the case of ZnSe-Te.

    Notes: A comparative study of the optical linewidths of photo- and electroluminescence from high-quality InGaN epilayers and commercial single quantum well light emitting diode structures was undertaken. Optical linewidths in both cases are temperature insensitive and increase systematically with increasing indium concentration. We assess the contribution of three mechanisms to the luminescence linewidth: alloy fluctuations, well width fluctuations, and strain effects. It is found that the broadening of the emission line is an intrinsic property of InGaN alloys. The piezoelectric effect in wurtzite semiconductor is proposed as a novel line-broadening mechanism. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Among 946 patients with nevus spilus we observed 5 patients (3 women and 2 men) with transformations on it – 2 cases with malignant melanoma and 3 cases with spitz-nevus. Histologically the nevus spilus is a superficial variant on congenital pigmented nevus missing corial parts. Because of the risk of transformation a regular skin examination is advisable, a prophylactical excision of nevi spili as used in congenital pigmented nevi should be discussed.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Von 946 Patienten mit 952 Naevi spili hatten 3 Frauen und 2 Männer Neubildungen auf vorbestehendem Naevus spilus – 2 Fälle mit malignem Melanom und 3 Fälle mit Spitz-Tumoren. Der Naevus spilus ist histologisch eine extrem dünne Variante des congenitalen Pigmentzellnaevus vom superfiziellen Typ ohne coriale Anteile. Wegen des möglichen Entartungsrisikos scheint eine regelmäßige hautärztliche Kontrolle empfehlenswert, eine prophylaktische Exzision der Naevi spili wie bei congenitalen Pigmentzellnaevi sollte diskutiert werden.
