    Notes: Abstract Transitional and turbulent oscillatory flow in a rigid pipe with long entry sections was investigated using flow visualization to establish the existence of coherent structures. Flow tracer and high speed motion pictures were used. The simple harmonic motion of a scotch yoke and flywheel linked to a piston and cylinder provided the flow driving force. The camera was convected with the flow by attaching it through a gearing system to the scotch yoke.

    Notes: Abstract A three-dimensional Particle Tracking Velocimetry (3-D PTV) technique has been developed to provide time-resolved, three-dimensional velocity field measurements throughout a finite volume. This technique offers many advantages for fundamental research in turbulence and applied research in areas such as mixing and combustion. The data acquired in 3-D PTV is a time sequence of stereo images of flow tracer particles suspended in the fluid. In this paper, the implementation of the technique is discussed in detail, as well as the results of an extensive statistical investigation of the performance of the algorithms. The technique has been optimized to allow fully automatic processing of long sequences of image pairs in a computationally efficient manner, hereby providing a viable, practical tool for the study of complex flows.

    Notes: Summary The present paper is a further development in our effort to describe non-Newtonian flow behavior. As in the past, the thixotropic shear stress or shear rate is characterized by the kinetic theory and currently a modified form ofOldroyds model provides the elastic contribution. Presented here are further modifications of the model in order to predict the first normal stress difference and logical changes to make the model more internally consistent. In order to test the approach, transient and steadystate data have been obtained with aWeissenberg rheogoniometer on a solution of polymethylmethacrylate in diethylphthalate. Both constant stress and constant shear rate data have been taken over a broad range of the parameters involved. To facilitate data acquisition, a PDP-15, model 30 computer was programmed to gather data at rates of 1000 points per second. Of the data obtained there is a great deal of uncertainty about the normal stress results. By optimization methods, the constants of the model were evaluated from steady-state data and transient results on stress growth and shear rate growth. Comparisons of the model with stress growth results as well as the prediction of the first normal stress difference are given. The inadequacies of the analysis are emphasized and possible points for improvement are made.

    Notes: Abstract The momentum and turbulent kinetic energy equations are solved for a number of phenomenological closure approximations. The various methods are evaluated by comparison with several selected sets of experimental data. The empirical constants are determined such that the deviation between the experimental and theoretical values is minimized. The minimization process is carried out via a logical search algorithm which can also be applied to other problems in which the minimum or maximum value of a function of several variables is desired.

    Notes: Abstract The free fall of a liquid-metal drop, heat transfer from the drop to its environment, and solidification of the drop are described for both gaseous and vacuum atmospheres. A simple model, in which the drop is assumed to fall rectilinearly, with behaviour like that of a rigid particle, is developed to describe cooling behaviour. Recalescence of supercooled drops is assumed to occur instantaneously when a specified temperature is passed. The effects of solidification and experimental parameters on drop cooling are calculated and discussed. Major results include temperature as a function of time, and of drag, time to complete solidification, and drag as a function of the fraction of the drop solidified.

    Notes: The dispersion of artificially produced softwood pulp flocs in controlled, plane, turbulent Couette flow was studied by using both monocular and stereoscopic film techniques. The mechanisms of controlled floc formation and of dispersion are proposed. For the latter, two mechanisms were observed, one global that involves deformation, breaking, and fragmentation, and one local that involves surfac erosion. The effect of the flow field stress level on the time and rate of dispersion is presented.
