Notes: Abstract Electrolysis of liquid hydrogen sulphide has been investigated. Pyridine was used to provide conductivity. The cathodic current efficiency for hydrogen production was 99.7 ± 0.5%; sulphur was the major anodic product with a current efficiency of 84.2 ± 4.5%. Ohmic losses in the solution were the largest source of voltage drop.

Notes: The radial variation of void fraction within a packed bed of uniform spheres has been found to vary from unity at the wall to about 38% in the interior of large beds. The voidage distribution takes the form of a damped oscillatory wave with the oscillations damped out at about 4½ to 5 sphere diameters from the container wall. The distribution function is essentially independent of whether the container wall is concave or convex.Continuous surfaces within the bed are responsible for local voidage variations similar to those at the container wall.An improved experimental technique is described in detail. The results presented are for a number of cases with D/d varying from 2.6 to infinity, and for boundary walls which are concave and convex.

Notes: Optimal feedback control has been implemented on a fifteen tray pilot scale rectifying column. The results show that excellent control is obtained in spite of major upsets in the feed flow rate and for large changes in the controller set point. Design and implementation costs for the optimal control system should be competitive with those for standard control systems.

Notes: A nearly optimal on-off control strategy, previously applied to a rectification column, has been successfully implemented on a full distillation column. The controller employs a linear combination of temperature measurements to adjust the reflux flow rate in order to maintain a desired overhead product composition. A simple relationship between the control coefficients is shown to be characteristic of countercurrent systems. This relationship allows the controller to be tuned on-line by the adjustment of a single parameter, thereby eliminating the need for a dynamic model of the process and for lengthy design calculations. The performance of the tuned on-off controller is compared with that of a tuned proportional plus integral controller and a single measuremnt on-off controller for feed flow disturbances and set point changes. Results show that the multi-measurement on-off control system is superior for both types of disturbances.

Notes: Nonlinear inferential control (NLIC) has been developed as a method for improving control of nonlinear systems. The controller is modelbased, and allows for direct use of available measurements. This paper presents the structure of NLIC and the manner in which it is applied to processes when the controlled variables are measured. Also described is the improvement in the process control using NLIC. Two illustrative examples are presented, a laboratory heat exchanger process and a simulated neutralization process. The results indicate that a substantial improvement in control is possible using NLIC.
