Notes: Summary Two new species of the dacetine ant genusKyidris from New Guinea are described. These were always found in mixed colonies with the larger, polymorphic dacetine speciesStrumigenys loriae Emery, which often occurs independently and is generally abundant in the lowland rain forests of New Guinea. The relationship of theKyidris to theStrumigenys is interpreted as a very primitive level of permanent, obligatory, nondulotic parasitism. Multiple queens of both genera occur together, and the brood is completely mixed. The worker population of the parasite is very large, and in one colony studied almost equaled that of the host. The parasite workers contribute to the colony labor by food-gathering and brood-handling, but are relatively inefficient in these tasks; they apparently do not participate in nest building at all.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. Eurhopalothrix heliscata n. sp. is an Asiatic representative of the little known ant tribe Basicerotini and the first member of the group to be studied intensively. We report evidence that it preys on a variety of termites, but also takes at least some other kinds of insects. Overall, the social behavior is simple relative to that of many other myrmicine ants. 2. Prey are hunted and retrieved singly. But foraging workers are also able to recruit nestmates to the vicinity of groups of prey and as a result accelerate retrieval of termites to the brood chambers. A prolonged exploration of the surrounding area also ensues. 3. With the aid of chemical cues, workers are able to recognize material from the vicinity of their nest. 4. The workers are notably thigmotactic. They use their wedge-shaped heads, hard bodies, and short legs to press into tight spaces. They seize the appendages of termites with their short, sharp-toothed mandibles, clasping these body parts of the prey even more tightly with the aid of their projecting, heavily sclerotized labra. 5. E. heliscata tend to gather in large, broodless groups away from the main part of the colony. This bivouacing behavior, which effectively dispenses the foragers over a wider area, may improve the efficiency of the predation on termites. 6. The workers appear not to practice food exchange, worker oviposition, or alarmdefense behavior, nor do they recruit during colony emigration. 7. Prolonged fighting and dominance-subordinance relations among queens have been observed under laboratory conditions. 8. Other details of nesting behavior and social interactions are described (see,e.g., table I).

Notes: Mass resolved carbon cluster cations from C+3 to C+20 have been photofragmented using 248 and 351 nm light. For an initial cluster C+n , the dominant fragment observed is C+n−3 . Fluence dependence measurements of photofragmentation yield bracketed dissociation thresholds, photofragmentation cross sections, and product branching ratios. Photodissociation with 248 nm light is found to be primarily linear with laser fluence for n〉5, but there are indications that C+3 and C+5 fragment only with the absorption of two or more photons. For 351 nm light, clusters with six and more atoms all show a linear dependence. The photofragmentation cross sections for both 351 and 248 nm light show a significant change as a function of cluster size.

Notes: On the basis of proposals by Cahn [Acta Met. (1962). 10, 179-183] for cubic crystals, a coherent elastic model is developed which makes it possible for the orientations of exsolution boundaries formed either by spinodal decomposition or homogeneous nucleation to be predicted. The elastic energy for the coherent exsolution boundary is calculated for all orientations of the boundary, the minimum value for this energy corresponding to the predicted boundary. A program has been written which can be applied to all crystal systems; it uses as input the lattice parameters of crystals having the same compositions as the exsolution domains and their corresponding elastic stiffnesses. The approximations of the model are discussed, especially the neglect of relaxation of the coherence stresses away from the boundary, and the uncertainties in the calculated results due to errors in or lack of knowledge of the input data. The coherent elastic model has been used to determine the orientations of exsolution boundaries in the feldspars. The agreement between calculated and observed exsolution boundaries is remarkable, considering that room-temperature lattice parameters and elastic stiffnesses are used. The angular differences are less than 3° in most cases. They may reach 20° in the labradorites because the input data are not well known. All observed exsolution boundaries have been accounted for and some unknown ones calculated. The results of the calculations may be used to explain the cause of the exsolution orientations and to suggest areas requiring further research.

Notes: The extent of moisture migration from the flesh of frozen, raw breaded shrimp was studied for 9 months. The experiments were designed to monitor the effects of moisture migration on the total net weights and the total “percent shrimp material.” The breaded shrimp were (1) blast frozen-stored in the retail freezer (−16°F, −26.6°C), (2) blast frozen-stored in the warehouse freezer (−12±F°2°, −24.4°C), (3) individually quick frozen (IQF)-stored in the retail freezer (−16°F, −26°C), and (4) individually quick frozen stored in the warehouse freezer (−12°F±2°, −24.4°C). As storage time increased the percent breading increased for all treatments. The percent shrimp, the gross weights, the net weights, and the percent moisture decreased as storage time increased. The rate of moisture migration was retarded in the breaded shrimp (i.e. IQF and blast frozen) stored in the warehouse freezer, when compared to the rate of moisture migration in the breaded shrimp (i.e. IQF and blast frozen) stored in the retail freezer.
