    Notes: The deliberate formation of solid precipitates is a treatment process commonly used to remove undesirable ions from solution. Where the chemistry of the water to be treated is complex, a knowledge of the chemical species present, and their concentrations, can be an effective tool in evaluating the effectiveness of the treatment process and in optimizing reagent dosage and operator control. The use of chemical equilibrium speciation computer programs offers a relatively rapid method to determine the type and concentrations of chemical species present at equilibrium. Some sulphate-rich waters of significance to South Africa have been speciated using the MINTEQA2 computer program. The effects of treating these waters with barium carbonate have been evaluated. The computer predictions of treated water quality have been experimentally verified.

    Notes: A LOCALLY DEVELOPED cross-flow microfiltration process using woven fabric tubes was used to concentrate waste activated sludge and anaerobic digested sludge from a conventional sewage works.Results showed that waste activated sludge could be concentrated from 5 to 50 g/l total solids. The permeate quality was good (0 to 50 mg/l suspended solids), but deteriorated both with time and increasing feed solids concentration.A cross-flow microfilter was coupled to a pilot scale anaerobic digester and the digester solids were increased from 26 to 55 g/l total solids. The organic loading to the digester was increased from 1.8 to 3.1 kg volatile solids per m3 per day. The solids retention time was held constant at 26 days, while the liquid retention time was decreased from 26 to 14 days. The permeate quality was significantly better than the supernatant liquor from a comparable digester (suspended solids 122 and 570 mg/l, respectively).Data obtained from the cross-flow microfiltration of waste activated sludge was used to regress for the constants in a mathematical model of steady-state flux.

    Notes: THE PROTOTYPE OF a tubular configured filter press has been installed at a local water treatment plant. The prototype unit dewaters the polyelectrolyte/Bentonite slurry resulting from the treatment of 30 Ml/d of surface water to a spadable cake. In this process a slurry is fed under pressure into a self-supporting array of porous fabric tubes; the liquid in the slurry filters through the tube walls while the slurry solids are deposited as a thin layer on the internal walls of the tubes. After a relatively thin cake has been formed, it is dislodged from the tube walls by means of a roller cleaning device. The cake is transported out of the tubes and deposited on a perforated conveyor belt where it is drained and conveyed to a collection hopper. The plant is fully automated and has been operating successfully since January 1987.

    Notes: In the ‘postgenome era’, most research on the neuroendocrine control of energy homeostasis has focused on hormonal and neuropeptide control of food intake (i.e. the amount of food eaten) in rats and mice. The amount of food consumed is influenced by both the motivation to procure food and the consummatory act of ingestion. In some species, the rate of food intake remains relatively constant, while survival is maintained via changes in food procurement, external storage and internal expenditure. For example, in hamsters, metabolic signals, peripheral hormones and central neuropeptides influence hunger motivation, food hoarding and changes in energy expenditure without necessarily influencing the amount of food ingested. A similar suite of metabolic signals, hormones and neuropeptides is involved in optimizing reproductive success under fluctuating energetic conditions. Reproductive processes are inhibited or delayed when energy expenditure outstrips energy intake and mobilization from storage. Estrous cyclicity in Syrian hamsters is sensitive to the availability of oxidizable glucose, but the presence of central glucose alone is not sufficient for normal estrous cycles. Food deprivation-induced anestrus does not depend upon food deprivation-induced increases in concentrations of adrenal hormones such as glucocorticoids. If hormones such as insulin and leptin play a role, they might do so by modulating the availability of glucose detected at extra-hypothalamic sites, instead of or in addition to direct effects on the mechanisms that control gonadotropin releasing hormone secretion. Despite our ability to measure and manipulate gene transcription, understanding of fuel homeostasis requires examination of indirect effects of hormones and neuropeptides on peripheral metabolism, attention to the motivational as well as consummatory aspects of ingestion, and the study of behaviour in a natural or seminatural context.

    Notes: Poly(methyl methacrylate) was drawn into fibers by melt extrusion followed immediately by a transient temperature drawing process. By varying five processing variables, fibers ranging from 0.635 mm to 25 μm in diameter were produced. Heat-induced relaxation of the aligned structure was used to determine the draw ratio of the resultant fibers and therefore the degree of polymer chain alignment imposed by the deformation process. The resulting changes in length and diameter were measured and it was found that draw ratios of 5-20 had been achieved under the varying processing conditions. It was also observed that fiber diameter immediately after drawing is a good predictor of the degree of orientation present in the fiber irrespective of the processing conditions. To test the effect molecular orientation has on material properties, fibers with varying degrees of orientation were tested in tension. As expected, increasing alignment resulted in increasing tensile strength. The maximum observed true ultimate tensile strength was 225 ± 53 MPa and was seen in fibers with a draw ratio equal to 18.7 ± 4.5. Fibers with a lower degree of alignment, while not as strong in tension, exhibited significantly increased ductility. True strains of as high as 25% were observed.
