Notes: Microwave and bake cooking operations destroyed approximately 90% of the ipomeamarone in sweet potato roots. 4-ipomeanol was more heat stable than ipomeamarone, although it also decreased substantially as a result of normal cooking. These findings are contrary to a previous report which indicated that these toxins were not destroyed by cooking.

Notes: The objectives of this study were to examine aspects of organization of a proposed national screening programme based in general practice. The target population of women aged 25–59 years and their general practitioners (GPs), in a defined inner city area, was identified from a population register of persons eligible for free medical services; a computerized system was developed for invitations and record linkage of cytology results. Smears were examined in one laboratory and follow up of women with abnormal smears was undertaken by one gynaecologist. A random sample of non-responders was surveyed by questionnaire. Response following two invitations was only 20%. Practices with male doctors only had significantly lower reponse rates (P〈0.001) than those with a female doctor/nurse. A survey of non-responders showed that over 20% of addresses were incorrect and 16% of those interviewed were ineligible for smear tests. A preference for a female to undertake smears was expressed by 67%, and 77% believed that the purpose of the cervical smear was to detect cancer. An accurate population register, health promotion, support for GP practices, provision of alternative venues for smear tests, development of computer systems, accurate data entry and fail-safe follow up are aspects of a cervical screening service which must be addressed prior to setting up a national service.

Notes: Pinnipeds are often monitored by counting individuals at haul-out sites, but the often large numbers of densely packed individuals at these sites are difficult to enumerate accurately. Errors in enumeration can induce bias and reduce precision in estimates of population size and trend. We used data from paired observers monitoring walrus haul-outs in Bristol Bay, Alaska, to quantify observer variability and assess its relative importance. The probability of a pair of observers making identical counts was 〈 0.1 for walrus groups with 〉50 individuals. Mean count differences ranged up to 25% for the largest counts, depending on beach and observers. In at least some cases, there was a clear tendency for counts of one observer to be consistently greater than counts of the other observer in a pair, indicating that counts of at least one of the observers were biased. These results suggest that efforts to improve accuracy of counts will be worthwhile. However, we also found that variation among observers was relatively small compared to variation among visits to a beach so that efforts to account for other sources of variation will be more important.

Notes: Abstract Plant growth form diversity (GFD) is high in the vegetation of North American deserts, and increases from north (Great Basin Desert) to south (Sonoran Desert). While abiotic features (annual temperature, precipitation, and seasonality) appear to limit the range of desert plant GFD, biotic features associated with the coexisting plants at a site, and their GF distribution, add further constraints. Climate may constrain the GF options at certain sites and select for some degree of GF convergence there, but within sites other species in the vegetation select for GF segregation that fosters the local coexistence of species. In this paper GF variation is viewed along structural niche axes, and related to classical niche theory; several corollaries of the theory are examined in the light of plant GF patterns. These are: a) regular spacing of species on the structural niche axis, and the concept of limiting similarity; b) niche axis complementarity, such that species dissimilar in position on one axis, e.g. GF, are similar in position on other axes, e.g. habitat or substrate, and vice versa; c) niche shifts in GF within species are expected, and occur, as the suite of coexisting species varies among sites with similar climate; d) in some desert plant guilds species with very similar GF do not coexist at a site, but act as geographical replacements in different sites.
