    Notes: Abstract The roles of the gubernaculum dentis, root formation, tooth crown and dental follicle in pre-functional eruption of a mandibular premolar have been studied in nine beagle dogs by radiographic and histologic evaluations of the effects of surgical ablation or removal of these structures on tooth eruption. The dental follicle was the only one of these structures required for the coordinated enlargement of the eruption pathway and formation of bone in the base of the bony crypt, the radiographic and histologic hallmarks of tooth eruption. These data, together with the topographic relationships of the dental follicle to areas of localized bone resorption and formation, are interpreted to mean that the dental follicle may influence, if not coordinate, these processes in tooth eruption.

    Notes: This paper documents and describes a contemporary course in gross anatomy, traditional in approach yet well-suited to today's medical curriculum and practice. In so doing, it looks beyond the “course catalog” description of the curriculum into the complexities and rationale of the gross anatomical teaching program. The purpose and methods of the course, such as dissection of the entire body in a clinically-relevant context, are examined. The value of the dissection process is discussed in terms of gaining anatomical knowledge, the team approach to learning and problem-solving, and student-faculty interactio at the dissection table. The significance of the dissection experience in terms of its often being the students' first encounter with death and serious pathology is recongnized and discussed in relationship to donor programs and the Convocation of Thanks. Comments on examination technique and stragety and examples of facilitating lectures and laboratory experinces are also included. In spite of its time-tested rationale, we wonder if the continued quest for the grant dollar, the current penchant for computer-aided instruction and curricular machinations, and - importantly - a dwindling supply of well-trained anatomists, is relegating this type of gross anatomy course to the passing parade?

    Notes: Eruption was studied by experimentally impacting and releasing permanent premolars in puppies. Eruption rates of both normal and experimentally delayed teeth were calculated from weekly radiographs. The rate of normal eruption is triphasic and similar to a normal growth curve. It has an initial slow exponential rate which changes to a more rapid exponential rate followed in turn by a terminal plateau. All of the teeth released from impaction erupted and their rates exceeded or equaled the normal rate.The morphology of the bony trabeculae beneath the erupting teeth and the relative amount of soft tissue between the bone and teeth are expressions of the eruptive rate. The trabeculae around rapidly erupting teeth are thinner, more delicate and more widely separated from one another than those of slowly erupting teeth. Trabecular orientation aligns with the direction of eruption, showing not only its vertical component, but also whether the tooth moved mesially or distally during eruption.

    Notes: Eruption of permanent premolars in puppies was studied by implanting stainless steel wires through the mandible to stop eruptive movement well before the teeth were to appear in the oral cavity. Histologic and radiologic comparisons of operated with normal (unoperated) sides disclosed that the eruptive pathway forms for the impacted teeth although their eruptive movements were effectively prevented. This clearly shows that the mechanism of eruption pathway formation is not dependent upon direct and continual pressure on the bone from the erupting teeth. The genesis of pathway formation appeared to be the same for the impacted teeth as for the controls i.e., through continued ostetoclasis in the margin of the stalk of the dental follicle.

    Notes: This paper describes a series of nine short clinically oriented dissection exercises as supplements for freshman gross anatomy courses. These procedures heighten and focus student interest, and they do not extensively lengthen the time required to accomplish the regular dissection assignments. The exercises are: (1) lumbar puncture, (2) anterior approach for shoulder arthroplasty, (3) acromioclavicu-lar dislocation, (4) fenestration of the diaphragm, (5) appendectomy, (6) cholecystectomy, (7) display of the facial nerve as in parotidectomy, (8) posterior approach for hip arthroplasty, and (9) injuries to the knee ligaments and meniscectomy.
