Diese Gleichung gilt auch für das Kurzzeitverhalten, für langsame Bewegungen, oder für die Überlagerung kleiner Deformationen auf große stationäre Verformungen bei allen viskoelastischen Materialien. Eine experimentelle Methode zur Bestimmung der in der Materialgleichung auftretenden Stoffkonstanten für dynamische Bedingungen wird gleichfalls angegeben.
    Notes: Summary In this paper a simplified constitutive equation for nonlinear slightly viscoelastic materials is derived by a method similar to that ofColeman andNoll. This equation is also valid for short times, slow motions, or small deformations superposed on a large steady deformation for all viscoelastic materials. An experimental method for determining the material parameters contained in this constitutive equation for dynamic conditions is also presented.

    Notes: Abstract Compressional stress pulses have been propagated in plasteline-clay rods by detonating small charges of lead azide at one end. A capacitance gage at the other end was used to measure particle displacement associated with the pulses and the particle velocity was obtained by differentiation. The shapes and amplitudes of the pulses were determined in separate experiments using composite clay-steel rods where the steel acted, in effect, as a pressure transducer. The techniques employed permitted comparatively accurate determination of some aspects of the dynamic behavior of clay. On the basis of preliminary results, the behavior of clay has been compared to that of a linear viscoelastic solid with the tentative goal of studying the validity of a viscoelastic constitutive model.

    Notes: Abstract A small disturbance was caused to propagate along a long, slender, prestrained Neoprene filament. The particle velocity of the pulse was measured at two stations along the length of the filament by means of electromagnetic transducers which operate on the Faraday principle. Particle velocity vs. time data were obtained from oscilloscope photographs of the transducer outputs for each level of prestrain from 0 percent up to 400 percent engineering strain. The two particle-velocity records for each level of prestrain were subjected to linear viscoelastic analysis which employed the use of numerical Fourier transforms of the particle-velocity records. Computer programs were written which allowed computation of the numerical transforms and from them the computation of the phase velocity and attenuation coefficients of the material over the narrow frequency bandwidth of the Fourier spectra of the particlevelocity pulses. Data analysis revealed that, at a given frequency, the phase velocity increases significantly and that the attenuation coefficient decreases significantly with an increase in prestrain level over the range of prestrains of the tests. These material properties, that of a decreasing attenuation and an increasing phase velocity with increasing prestrain, are suggestive of the open possibility of the ability of the material to develop and support a shock wave for a large-amplitude disturbance.

    Notes: Abstract In recent years, several mathematical models have been proposed to describe the quasi-static response of fiber-reinforced materials, consisting of continuous, elastic fibers embedded in a linear viscoelastic matrix. By assuming that geometric dispersion (dispersion resulting from the internal geometry of the material) is small in comparison to viscoelastic dispersion (dispersion resulting from the viscoelastic nature of the material), these proposed constitutive equations can be extended from a quasi-static regime to a dynamic regime. Here, we examine how the extension to the dynamic regime may be accomplished, compare the results with a theoretical model that includes geometric dispersion, and use the results of an experimental program to evaluate the models. In general, the quasi-static constitutive equations predict phase velocities that are larger than that predicted by the model which contains geometric dispersion and attenuation coefficients that are lower; and, the experimental results agree with the theoretical predictions, provided the fibers were spread more or less uniformly over the cross section.

    Notes: Abstract Explosives have been used to produce weak shock waves in central cavities of Plexiglas spheres. Shock pressures engendered were less than the so-called stable shock threshold and they resulted in a decomposition of the shock wave into an elastic precursor preceding the so-called plastic shock wave. The differential moiré method has been used to measure simultaneously the precursor and shock-wave velocities, as well as the velocity of the cavity interface. Moreover, the displacement field given by the moiré pattern yields the components of strains and the particle velocity behind each shock.
