    Notes: Final thermal preferendum (T) experiments were conducted in a horizontal thermal gradient tank from the beginning of August 2001 to mid-November 2001 using Atlantic cod Gadus morhua from 6·5 to 79·0 cm fork length (LF). The value of T varied significantly (P 〈 0·005) with LF(T = 7·23–0·054LF), with smaller (younger) fish choosing higher temperatures than larger (older) fish. The preferendum varied from 6·9° C for fish of 6·5 cm to 3·0° C for those of 79·0 cm. Experiments comparing fish positions in the gradient tank between thermal gradients of 0·5–11·0 and 4·5–14·5° C demonstrated that fish positions were determined by temperature selection instead of undesirable tank effects. This study is the first to demonstrate the effect of ontogeny on temperature preferences of a marine fish species.

    Notes: Abstract. Traditional biochemieal techniques and a stain to detect proteases in polyacrylamide gels were used to identify and partially characterize three proteases, P1, P2 and P3, produced by Aeromonas hydrophila strain Ah 22. P1 was found to be a heat-labile serine protease with an optimum pH of 7·5, while P2 is a heat-stable metalloprotease with an optimum pH of 8·0, and P3 is a moderately heat-stable metalloprotease with peak activity beween pH 7 and 11. A comparison of 17 other strains of the A. hydrophila complex indicated that four produced P1, P2 and P3. Two strains produced just P1 and P3; one produced only P3; six produced two different serine proteases, P2a and P2b; and two produced a number of uncharacterized proteases. Virulence studies in age-0 + channel catfish indicated no correlation between either quantitative or qualitative protease production and virulence.

    Notes: Diel feeding patterns of herring Clupea harengus and mackerel Scomber scombrus in the southern Gulf of St Lawrence were examined based on samples obtained by midwater trawling between 19 and 26 June 2001. Within 3 h time periods, stomach contents tended to be more similar between fish from the same tow than between fish from different tows. Thus, in contrast to previous diet studies, which have used individual fish stomachs as independent observations, tow was used as the experimental unit in statistical analyses in this study. Diel patterns in stomach fullness were identified using generalized additive models. Two peaks in stomach fullness occurred for herring, one in the morning and the other in the evening. Mackerel showed an increase in feeding intensity throughout the day with a peak in mid-afternoon. The diel changes in stomach contents suggested rapid gastric evacuation rates for both species, especially for herring. The estimate of the instantaneous evacuation rate for herring was twice that for mackerel. Calanus copepods (mainly C. hyperboreus), fishes (mainly capelin Mallotus villosus) and euphausiids were the main prey found in the stomachs of both species. Calanus copepods dominated the diet of herring regardless of time period. They also dominated the diet of mackerel during the late afternoon, evening and night while fishes and euphausiids were dominant during the morning and early afternoon. These diel patterns emphasize the need for sampling throughout the day and night in order to estimate ration and diet composition for bioenergetic and ecosystem models.

    Notes: Oxygen saturation levels that killed 50 and 5% of cod Gadus morhua over 96 h averaged 21·2 and 27·7%, respectively. No fish survived at 10% saturation and only a few survived at 16% saturation, whereas no mortality occurred at 34 and 40% oxygen saturation. Since metabolic rate and oxygen consumption increase with increasing temperature, we hypothesized that cod would be less tolerant to hypoxic conditions at 6 than at 2° C. However, temperature (2 and 6° C) had no measurable impact on cod survival. Small (mean & S.D.; 45·2 ± 4·2 cm) and large (57·5 ± 3·8 cm) cod had the same tolerance to hypoxia. At the end of the experiments, hypoxia had a significant effect on blood haematocrit, mean cellular haemoglobin content, liver lactate, plasma glucose and plasma lactate, but accounted for only a small fraction (〈 10%) of the variation, except for plasma lactate which exhibited a strong response with concentrations increasing progressively with decreasing levels of oxygen saturation. Temperature had a significant effect on most variates in normoxia and hypoxia. Variates also affected by oxygen level showed significant interactions between oxygen and size or temperature effects. However, these interactions accounted for only a small proportion of the variation. Physiological parameters indicated that extending the duration of our tests beyond 96 h would not have changed our estimates of the lethal thresholds. Hypoxic conditions are a permanent feature of the deep waters of the Gulf of St Lawrence. This study shows that a significant portion of the benthic habitats in the Gulf are uninhabitable for cod which would be expected to avoid waters below 28% oxygen saturation.

    Notes: Growth in length and mass, improvements in condition, as well as final condition of c. 700 g Atlantic cod Gadus morhua were significantly less at 45% and 56% O2 saturation than at 65%, 75%, 84% and 93% O2 saturation. Hypoxia decreased food consumption. In turn, food consumption explained 97% of the variation in growth. Conversion efficiency varied slightly, but significantly, with level of dissolved O2, except that the group reared at 93% O2 had a lower than expected conversion efficiency. Slow growth in low O2 was not due to increased activity, because activity decreased in hypoxia. In the Gulf of St Lawrence, waters deeper than 200 m usually are 〈65% saturated in O2, and thus should impact negatively on cod growth.
