Notes: Lamp-pumped laser performance of Nd3+-doped strontium fluorapatite, Sr5(PO4)3F or S-FAP, has been characterized and compared with that of Nd3+-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) at both 1.06 and 1.3 μm. Nd3+:S-FAP was found to exhibit lower thresholds and lower slope efficiencies than Nd3+:YAG. The former is attributed to the higher emission cross section, and the latter to lower Nd3+ concentration in S-FAP. The 1.3 μm lasing of Nd3+:S-FAP is of particular interest because of its high emission cross section (2.4×10−19 cm2). Q-switched and dual-wavelength lasing operation were also demonstrated in Nd3+:S-FAP. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High slope efficiency and low threshold laser performance have been achieved for both long pulsed and cw operation at 1.065 μm in Nd3+-doped strontium fluorovanadate crystal, Nd3+:Sr5(VO4)3F, when pumped by narrow band pulsed Cr:LiSAF and cw Ti:sapphire lasers. However, there are inequivalent Nd3+ sites in the crystal. The absorption of Nd3+ ions in secondary sites, sites other than the site which contributes to lasing, may reduce the pumping efficiency and, consequently, the lasing efficiency. Strong concentration quenching of the Nd3+ 4F3/2 state was also observed reducing the quantum efficiency of the laser transition from this state. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Site-selective spectroscopy reveals that Nd3+ ions occupy more than 40 different crystal-field environments in Sr5(VO4)3F. Preferential energy transfer to the site responsible for 1 μm lasing occurs but becomes less complete with increasing temperature. The 4I and 4F3/2 Stark levels of the lasing site have been determined and an analysis of the crystal field performed. From the crystal-field fitting parameters Bkq, a calculated energy-level spectrum is determined up to 17 500 cm−1 with a rms deviation from the available experimental levels of 6 cm−1. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High-resolution Fourier-transform absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy with site-selective excitation reveal two sites for Nd3+ ions in each of the two new crystals KLiYF5 and KLiGdF5. Energy levels for the 4I multiplets and the 4F3/2 multiplet have been determined separately for each site in each crystal. Comparison of spectra and levels indicates that the crystal fields in each of the two materials are nearly identical. This suggests that KLiGdF5 is isostructural to KLiYF5.

Notes: The spectroscopic parameters of Er3+-doped crystals were determined with regard to the upconversion laser parameters of the green transition 4S3/2→4I15/2. The influence of excited-state absorption on this laser channel was determined. Furthermore, upconversion pump mechanisms using ground-state and excited-state absorption around 810 and 970 nm were investigated by direct measurements of excited-state absorption. The spectroscopic results confirm the pulsed room-temperature laser experiments on the 4S3/2→4I15/2 transition. The lasers based on Er:LiYF4, Er:Y3Al5O12, and Er:Lu3Al5O12 were directly excited into the upper laser level by an excimer laser pumped dye laser in the blue spectral range. In Er:LiYF4, Er:KYF4, and Er:Y3Al5O12, laser action was achieved with two-step upconversion pumping by a Ti:sapphire laser and a krypton ion laser. In the case of the fluorides, the additional pumping with the krypton ion laser was not necessary. The laser emission wavelengths were 551 nm for Er:LiYF4, 561 nm for Er:Y3Al5O12 and Er:Lu3Al5O12, and 562 nm for Er:KYF4. In addition, green quasi-cw laser emission of Er:LiYF4 pumped with an argon-ion laser was realized at room temperature.

Notes: A comprehensive investigation on the spectroscopic properties and laser performance of Nd3+ doped GdLiF4 (GLF), a new laser crystal, is reported. Our high resolution absorption and emission spectra for GLF are nearly identical to those of Nd:LiYF4 (YLF), a well known laser crystal, strongly suggesting that the two crystals are isostructural. The laser performance of Nd:GLF is very similar to that of Nd:YLF. A maximum laser-pump-laser slope efficiency of 68% and 67% was obtained for low (1.0 at. %) and high (4.0 at. %) Nd concentration GLF respectively. Concentration quenching of the fluorescence decay time was observed and appears to be due to the dipole-dipole interaction between the isolated Nd3+ ions and Nd3+ ion pairs.

Notes: Site-selective photoluminescence spectroscopy of Ho3+ ions in single-crystal KYF4, measured with a Fourier-transform spectrometer at 80 and 2 K sample temperatures, gives evidence for two dissimilar classes of crystal-field sites. Three similar sites contribute to each class giving a total of six sites in agreement with recent crystallographic results. Analysis of crystal-field splittings indicates that only one of the classes can contribute to Yb→Ho upconversion green lasing in (Yb,Ho):KYF4.

Notes: We have shown that strontium lanthanum aluminate (SrLaAlO4) has considerable potential as a substrate material for high-temperature superconductor (high Tc) microwave applications. Excellent lattice match is obtainable on a 14° tilt from the c axis. The lattice dimensions encourage ab plane epitaxial growth. The thermal expansion was found to be 7.4×10−6 °C−1. Patterned sputtered niobium resonators on SrLaAlO4 exhibit Q values at 5 K comparable to similar niobium resonators on polycrystalline alumina, (Q(approximately-greater-than)10 000 from 2 to 15 GHz). Deposited YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) films on this substrate show sharp ac susceptibility transitions indicating good homogeneity and ab plane orientation.

Notes: We report efficient, diode-pumped, self-frequency doubling (SFD) in the newly developed laser crystal Nd3+:YCa4O(BO3)3. More than 350 mW of fundamental output power at 1060 nm was achieved with a slope efficiency of 51%. With one watt of absorbed pump power, 62 mW of green cw laser emission at 530 nm was observed with proper phase matching. This initial performance, and the good optical properties of the crystalline host, are encouraging for the development of a high power diode-pumped SFD visible light laser source. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Hydrogen as 2H has been incorporated into LiAlO2 and LiGaO2 by both ion implantation and by exposure to a plasma at 250 °C. In the implanted samples, approximately 50% of the hydrogen is lost from the surface during annealing at 500 °C for 20 min, and essentially all is gone by 700 °C. This hydrogen retention is considerably less than for other materials that are being used as substrates for III-nitride epilayer growth, such as SiC and sapphire. The indiffusion of 2H from a plasma is much faster for LiAlO2 with an apparent diffusivity at 250 °C of ∼10−13 cm−2 s−1, approximately two orders of magnitude larger than for LiGaO2. Hydrogen outdiffusion from LiAlO2 or LiGaO2 substrates during III-nitride epitaxy should not be a significant problem; the hydrogen should have left these materials at temperatures less than epitaxial layer growth temperatures. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
