Notes: [Auszug] With the increasing emergence of genome-wide analysis technologies (including comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), expression profiling on microarrays, differential display (DD), subtractive hybridization, and representational difference analysis (RDA)), there is frequently a need to amplify ...

Notes: [Auszug] Mutations of HFE are responsible for haemochromatosis, and a 5474A mutation (g.5474G→A, C282Y) was found to be present in 83–100% of typical patients with this disorder. Previous studies have determined the prevalence of haemochromatosis by restriction endonuclease digestion or ...

Notes: Abstract The case of a 6-year-old Inuit female with the epidemic form of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) with myocardial involvement and probable cardiac tamponade is presented. This case illustrates the multisystemic nature of the syndrome, and to our knowledge, cardiac tamponate as a probable terminal event in HUS has not been reported previously.

Notes: Abstract This paper explores the role of endothelins (ETs) in diabetes-induced testicular damage by investigating, in a temporal manner, testes from streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Testicular and epididymal weights and testicular morphology were assessed. Cell death was evaluated by light microscopy using conventional staining and morphology, and by apoptotic cell staining using the Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP Nick End-Labeling (TUNEL) technique. Expression of endothelin-1 (ET-1) mRNA was evaluated by a semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method. Furthermore, effects of a mixed ETA and ETB receptor antagonist, bosentan, were studied. Testicular weights did not show any change at 1 month of follow-up, but were decreased after 6 months of diabetes. However, epididymal weights were significantly decreased at the end of both time periods in the diabetic rats. Morphological evaluations of the testes from diabetic rats showed a reduction in seminiferous tubular diameter, an increase in the number of empty testicular tubules and an increase in vascular density. Furthermore, degenerated germ cells and TUNEL-positive cells were significantly higher in diabetic rats than in control animals. The changes in diabetic animals were associated with increased ET-1 mRNA expression and were prevented by bosentan treatment. Administration of bosentan prevented decreased testicular weights, reduced seminiferous tubule diameters, increased vascular densities and incidences of degenerated and apoptotic germ cells and empty tubules in diabetic rats at the long-term follow-up. These results demonstrated that an ET-1 mediated pathway might be involved in testicular injury and germ-cell apoptosis in diabetes.

Notes: Summary The severe storm of December 1959 generated high waves which were measured by the ship-borne wave recorder on the weathership “Weather Reporter” at Station “J” in the North Atlantic. A co-operative effort of wave hindcasters in Germany, Britain, France and U.S.A. led to preparation of wave energy spectra from the wave records, and the publication in “Deutsche Hydrographische Zeitschrift” (Bretschneider et al. [1962]) of the measured data under joint authorship of the collaborators, as well as to the furnishing to participants of identical synoptic weather maps. Individual investigators (Walden, Germany; Darbyshire, Britain; Miche, France; Bretschneider, Neumann, Pierson, and Wilson, U.S.A.) were then supposed to apply their particular prediction techniques for comparison of hindcast waves with the wave conditions measured. This note attempts to compare available published and unpublished results of the analyses.

Notes: A study of bending of plates for small deformations by applying the finite element method is presented in this paper.A new class of displacement functions has been developed for rectangular bending elements. For the first time a method is proposed for the derivation of displacement functions in which trigonometric expressions that had apparently failed to yield satisfactory results in earlier attempts can be used along with polynomial terms. The derivation leads to conforming type of displacement functions which satisfy the convergence criterion. The approach also demonstrates how many more new displacement functions can be found.
