    Notes: Objectives: The Oral Health of Older Adults with Dementia was instigated in the late 1990s to quantify and compare coronal and root caries incidence and increments in community-living older Australians with and without dementia.Methods: A longitudinal design was used to conduct dental inspections at baseline and one-year, for two groups of randomly selected community-living older adults - one group of 116 people with dementia and a comparison group of 116 people without dementia.Results: At one-year there were 103 dementia and 113(112 dentate) non-dementia participants. Coronal and root surface caries incidence was higher for dementia participants (p〈0.05). Dementia participants had higher coronal and root caries adjusted caries increments (ADJCI) (p〈0.01). Both coronal and root ADJCI were evident in half of dementia participants, compared with one-quarter of non-dementia participants. Dementia participants with higher coronal ADJCI were those who had visited the dentist since baseline, who were taking neuroleptics with high anticholinergic adverse effects, and whose carer had high carer burden score (p〈0.01). Dementia participants with higher root ADJCI were those needing assistance with oral hygiene care and whose carers had difficulties with oral hygiene care (p〈0.05). Baseline characteristics predictive in linear regression for: (1) coronal caries increments among all participants were - dementia participants, those with cognitive testing scores indicative of moderate-severe dementia, those with private health insurance; (2) root caries increments among all participants were - dementia participants, and those who had 1 decayed/filled root surface at baseline. Among dementia participants, being male was the baseline characteristic predictive in logistic regression for coronal caries increments, and having 1 decayed coronal surface was the baseline characteristic predictive for root caries increments.Conclusions: Coronal and root caries incidence and increments were significantly higher in the community-living older adults with dementia over the one-year follow-up period. Dementia participants had high levels of coronal and root caries increments; characteristics related to high caries increments included sex (males), dementia severity (moderate-severe), high carer burden, oral hygiene care difficulties, use of neuroleptic medication (with high anticholinergic adverse effects) and previous experience of caries.

    Notes: Summary Infrared reflection spectroscopy has been used to investigate a series of poly(aryl-ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) plaques of differing crystallinity. Correlations have been observed between intensity changes in the reflection spectra and the crystallinity as measured by wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). These correlations enable estimates to be made of the crystallinity close to the surface and complement the bulk data obtained by WAXS.

    Notes: The combination of supercritical fluid extraction, high resolution capillary supercritical fluid chromatography, and Fourier transform infrared microspectrometry is described for the separation and identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a coal tar pitch. The variable solvating power of the supercritical fluid was utilized to selectively fractionate the sample. The fluid extract was decompressed through a frit restrictor into the sample cavity of a cooled microvalve injector, where the analytes were deposited and concentrated for subsequent chromatographic analysis. Several of the analytes separated in the chromatograph were collected on a potassium bromide disc at a solvent elimination inter-face for subsequent infrared analysis involving the use of an infra-red microscope accessory. The spectra obtained show the power of this detection technique for distinguishing between isomers.

    Notes: The feasibility of applying an expert system for the interpretation of Raman spectra of complex acrylic and styrenated acrylic copolymers was demonstrated. The rules for the interpretation were generated automatically within the expert system from peak tables of the relevant homopolymer spectra. Application of these rules to copolymers gave excellent interpretation results without giving false negatives or false positives. Although the sensitivity limit for detection was not determined for the structural fragments characterized, components in copolymers were identified with very high probabilities down to the ca. 15% (w/w) level, indicating that the lower limit is much less than this.

    Notes: Raman spectra of the α-, β-, γ- and smectic polymorphs of isotactic polypropylene were recorded at 298 and 16.5 K. At 298 K the spectra of the polymorphs were very similar except in the antisymmetric C—H stretching region. However, at 16 K the Raman spectra of the polymorphs show different features in several wavenumber shift regions. Comparisons are made with infrared spectra recorded at 298 and 100 K and interpretations are made on the basis of non-equivalent sites in the monoclinic unit cells.

    Notes: A range of thermally annealed isotropic and uniaxially drawn PEEK films were examined using polarized Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy in an attempt to obtain useful quantitative correlations with crystallinity. Both univariate (carbonyl stretching wavenumber measurement) and multivariate (partial least-squares) calibrations were found to give good correlations, in the latter case yielding a standard error of prediction of ca. 2.4% crystallinity. Both approaches show potential for measurement of crystallinity in both isotropic and oriented samples using just one correlation model. A previously suggested crystallinity index (the ratio of the 1600 and 1610 cm-1 band intensities) failed to give a satisfactory correlation for either sample set. It was also shown that the ratio of the 1146 cm-1 band intensities measured with the laser polarized perpendicular and parallel to the draw direction correlates with the sample birefringence.
