    Notes: Abstract  Nd, Sr and O isotope systematics were used to investigate the petrogenesis of two adjacent plutons of the Bethlehem Gneiss (BG) and the Kinsman Quartz Monzonite (KQM), exposed within the Central Maine Terrane (CMT) of New England. Both are Acadian-aged (≈413 Ma) synmetamorphic and syntectonic members of the New Hampshire Plutonic Series (NHPS). Potential source rocks analyzed for this study include Silurian and Devonian metasedimentary rocks of the CMT, and Ordovician metasedimentary rocks and granitic gneisses of the Bronson Hill Anticlinorium (BHA), which border the CMT to the west. The ɛSr(413),  ɛNd(413) and δ18O values for the KQM range from 56.3 to 120.0, 2.8 to −6.4, and 7.6‰ to 12.9‰, respectively; values for the BG range from 7.4 to 144.7, 0.6 to −9.3, and 8.3‰ to 11.3‰, respectively; and values for possible source rocks range from 38.1 to 654.2, −10.7 to 5.4, and 6.2‰ to 14.1‰, respectively. Both the BG and KQM have extremely heterogeneous initial isotopic compositions consistent with mixing of multiple crustal source rocks, and neither contains a volumetrically significant (i.e., ≥10%) mantlederived component. Overlapping values of ɛNd(413),  ɛSr(413) and δ18O values for both the BG and KQM samples resemble values for metasedimentary host rocks of the CMT and BHA. We observe no systematic correlations between ɛNd and ɛSr values for either the BG or the KQM. The ɛSr and δ18O values for the BG do not form any simple mixing trends, nor is there any direct correlation between the isotopic compositions of contact BG samples and their adjacent host rocks, in contrast to our observations for the KQM (Lathrop et al. 1994). We propose that the KQM and BG magmas were generated through anatexis of metasedimentary rocks from both the BHA and CMT in response to crystal thickening during the Acadian orogeny. Melting may have been initiated within CMT metasediments in response to high heat production in these mid-crustal rocks combined with crustal thickening, whereas melting of BHA rocks with normal crustal heat production, which were located at lower-crustal levels than CMT rocks, is likely to have been driven by crustal thickening alone. Following upward advection of mobile BHA magmas, BHA- and CMT-derived magmas may have mingled during complex Acadian deformation in the CMT, thus accounting for the isotopic similarities we observe between the BG and the KQM.

    Notes: Abstract To interpret correctly the isotopic composition of metmorphic rocks and minerals, the effect of nettransfer reactions must be quantitatively evaluated. Such evaluation requires a complete set of linearly independent, net-transfer reactions that fully describe the reacting system. The set of net-transfer reactions is then coupled with mass-balance equations for stable isotopes. Reaction spaces can be contoured with isopleths of °18O, °13C, and δD of minerals which allows evaluation of the effect of different reactions and bulk compositions on the stable isotopic composition of minerals and rocks. Using this approach, we examined the effect of fractionation of isotopes due to net-transfer reactions at the biotite and second-sillimanite isograds in northern New England. Our analysis shows that the shift in °13C and °18O at an isograd depends strongly upon the overall net-transfer reaction at the isograd and the bulk composition of the rock. The use of model isograd reactions to determine isotopic shifts, therefore, can lead to serious errors in the interpretation of isotopic data. At the second-sillimanite isograd °18O qtz (quartz), °18O kspar (K feldsdpar), and °18O wr (whole rock) decrease by ∼0.5, 1.0, and 0.8 per mil, respectively. Quantitative evaluation of the effect of fractionation of isotopes by net-transfer reactions shows that: (1) the relative changes in oxygen isotopes across the isograd could be caused by distillation of fluids during develatilization reactions; (2) the magnitude of the observed isotopic shifts often differs by a factor of 2 from the calculated shifts due to reaction progress alone. The difference between observed and calculated shifts is attributed to either, differences in bulk composition between individual rocks, or, to isotopic exchange between minerals after peak metamorphism. At the biotite isograd the shifts in carbon and oxygen isotope values are different from predicted shifts caused by net-transfer reactions alone. This discrepancy suggests that fluids infiltrated the rocks during the formation of the biotite isograd.

    Notes: Abstract We measured the C- and O-isotopic composition of carbonate minerals in the Waits River Formation, eastern Vermont, to determine the extent of fluid infiltration during regional metamorphism over an approx. 2000 km2 area in a deep-seated (〉25 km) Barrovian terrane. From a petrologic study of this terrane, Ferry proposed the existence of a large regional metamorphic hydrothermal system with two first-order features: (1) on the scale of the entire terrane fluid flow was focused into the axes of two major antiforms of regional extent; (2) on a smaller scale (about 100 km2) flow was further focused around synmetamorphic granitic plutons that intruded along the axes of the antiforms. We find isotopic evidence for both the regional hydrothermal activity along the antiforms and the more intense fluid flow around synmetamorphic plutons. The evidence for hydrothermal activity around the plutons is large heavy isotope depletions, up to 6–9‰ in δ18Ocarb and δ13Ccarb, in diopside zone rocks adjacent to the plutons. These isotopic shifts are greater than can be explained solely by prograde metamorphic reactions. We find two lines of evidence for the more diffuse regional flow that was focused into axes of the antiforms. First, δ18Ocarb and δ13Ccarb, within individual outcrops become increasingly homogeneous with increasing grade towards antiform axes, indicating that the rocks equilibrated with a permeating fluid. Second, there are depletions in 18O near the margins of the Waits River Formation which can be interpreted as a dispersed, advective infiltration front displaced toward the antiform axes. These fronts were modelled using Eq. 13 of Bickle and Baker and imply time-integrated fluid of 105–106 cm3/cm2, which are consistent with values derived by Ferry from measured progress of prograde devolatilization reactions.
