Notes:
The absorption rate of sulfur dioxide from a gas mixture of SO2 and N2 into aqueous acetic acid and adipic acid solutions at pH 4 to 6 has been measured at 25°C in a continuous stirred vessel with an unbroken gas-liquid interface. The experimental data have been modeled by approximate surface renewal theory with multiple equilibrium reactions. The model has been used to evaluate the relative effectiveness of eleven organic acid additives at typical limestone scrubber conditions. Adipic, sulfopropionic, sulfosuccinic, and hydroxypropionic acids appear to be the most promising alternatives.
