Notizen: Summary A one-compartment model with first-order absorption has provided good fits to five sets of indomethacin data and four sets of ketoprofen data taken at different times of day. There was substantial variation in the model parameters with time of administration and most of the features of this variation applied equally to both drugs. From the data examined, the source of variation appears to be mainly in the absorption phase and this was confirmed using a chronokinetic analysis, in which simultaneous fits were obtained with time-variant rate parameters. However, there may also be circadian variation in protein binding. The danger of quoting parameter values for either of these two drugs based on administration at a single time of day has been illustrated, and this may well be true for other drugs.

Notizen: Abstract Attempts have been made to fabricate a bicomponent composite reinforcing element comprised of a central core of carbon fibre filaments surrounded by a cylindrical silicon carbide sheath. Such fibres are particularly attractive for composite reinforcement since they are potentially capable of exhibiting “duplex” type behaviour, thereby providing a possible means of minimizing anisotropy effects and increasing composite fracture toughness and ductility. Furthermore these elements should provide additional advantages such as eventually enabling multi-filament tows of high strength, low modulus carbon fibre to be formed into large compound fibres which combine high specific strength with a significantly improved overall Young's modulus arising from the stiffness of the ceramic sheath, which should also exhibit a high resistance to chemical attack. Methods of consolidating the multi-filament tow prior to coating have been investigated and suitable preliminary treatments evolved; tows have been coated with silicon carbide using a conventional vapour phase deposition technique to form elements basically conforming to “duplex” requirements. Initial tensile tests upon these elements are reasonably encouraging and reveal none of the side effects encountered previously with boron coatings; it is anticpated that much stronger silicon carbide tubes may be fabricated eventually by this technique using more closely controlled reaction conditions.

Notizen: Abstract A preliminary study has been made of the fracture surface energies and modes of failure of unidirectionally reinforced fibrous composites containing bicomponent (duplex) reinforcing elements with non-fracturing cores. Local high stress concentrations have been produced by the use of severely notched specimens of the Tattersall and Tappin type which have been tested in three-point bending. Comparisons have been made with conventional materials tested under similar conditions. It has been shown that the duplex fibre-reinforced specimens are able to support a substantially constant load up to deformations at which conventional materials have either failed completely or are able to support only relatively negligible bending loads. The effective fracture surface energies of experimental duplex fibre systems subjected to this degree of deformation are of the same order of magnitude, on a weight for weight basis, as those of the toughest available metal alloys. It is observed that when the permanently deformed duplex fibre systems are subjected to further deformations of a cyclic nature within the relevant elastic range of the material, relatively large amounts of energy are absorbed by frictional losses during decoupling and recoupling of the core-sheath interface. Possible reasons for this are discussed. The influence of transverse reinforcement on the generation and development of secondary matrix cracks has also been investigated.
