Notes: Lard was fractionated into olein and stearine, and lard olein was further refined. The effects of fractionation and refining of lard on the removal of cholesterol by β- cyclodextrin (β-CD) were investigated. The cholesterol in refined lard was more easily removed by β-CD; more than 90% of cholesterol in bleached lard was effectively removed by stirring with 4%β-CD. The oxidative stability of lard was increased after bleaching. Fractionation not only reduced the cholesterol content but also the saturated fatty acids in lard. Considering the cholesterol removal efficacy and lard quality, the optimal step for cholesterol removal in lard by β-CD is between bleaching and deodorization.

Notes: The effect of nitrogen interstitial in α-Fe crystalline on the magnetic soft properties of Fe87.5Ta12.5Nx films has been investigated. The magnetic soft properties can be improved by carefully controlling the nitrogen flow ratio during sputtering and the postannealing to result in a film with fine grain size and low magnetostriction. Using x-ray diffraction technique, the nitrogen content in the α-Fe crystalline of FeTaN film can be estimated from the effect of lattice expansion of α-Fe crystalline due to nitrogen interstitial. It is found that the film with about 7.5 at. % N2 in α-Fe crystalline exhibits the best magnetic soft properties of Br=1.6 T, Hc=0.2 Oe and μi(1 MHz)=3400, respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis is found to provide a proper and an easy way to identify the suitable condition for growing excellent magnetic soft FeTaN thin films. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Densely sintered Mn–Zn ferrites with grain size varying between 1 and 6 μm were obtained. Then the effect of grain size was investigated in detail by power loss analysis and scanning electron microscopy examination of microstructure. It is found that the power loss is seen to be lowered from 260 to 120 kW/m3 at 500 kHz, 50 m T and 90 °C with grain size decreased in the order of 3 μm. It is assumed that the residual loss from domain wall resonance is a dominant factor of power loss from 500 kHz to 1 MHz. Therefore we conclude that Mn–Zn ferrite display a grain size dependent power loss with transition at grain size about 3 μm due to the absence of intragranular domain wall and these fine core materials can be prepared by low sintering temperature and the optimum control of atmosphere containing 0.5% O2. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The roles of five different dietary fibres (cellulose, agar, guar gum, carrageenan and carboxy-methylcellulose) each as 10% wt/wt added into the diet, affecting the intestinal sugar absorption, blood sugar level and utilization of dextrin were studied in hybrid tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus × O. aureus; dextrin and glucose were also included in the study as controls for comparison. There were seven dietary groups: each diet was fed to three aquaria each containing 15 fish. The experiment was carried out in a closed circulation, filtered, rearing system for 2 months. The results indicated that the weight gain percentage and food conversion ratio were significantly (P〈0.05) lower in tilapia fed fibre-containing diets than those of tilapia fed dextrin or glucose diet. The intestinal absorption of carbohydrate and the blood sugar content of tilapia were low when diets contained fibre, regardless of the source.

Notes: In quantum well infrared photodetectors, the detector dark current usually is composed of a wide range of energies originated from thermionic emission as well as thermally assisted tunneling. Yet, it is a common practice to assign a single noise gain to all electrons irrespective of their energies. This assigned value can only represent the mean since both the hot-electron lifetime and the transit time, whose ratio determines the gain, are energy dependent. In this work, we have resolved the energy dependence of the noise gain using an electron energy filter. We find that although the noise gain increases initially with energy as expected, it reaches a maximum at 0.27 eV above the GaAs conduction band edge, and then decreases and forms a minimum at 0.31 eV. We attribute this decrease to the Γ-L intervalley scattering, which increases the transit time of the electrons. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The present authors found that Mn–Zn ferrites containing Er2O3 had improved values of σs (specific magnetization) and amplitude permeability. Samples with different addition amount of Er2O3 were sintered at 1180 °C. The results show that Er2O3 addition from 0.02 to 0.1 wt % causes the amplitude permeability to increase from 1070 to 2180. The magnetization can be increased from 91.6 to 92.8 emu/g within the range 0.02–0.1 wt %. Furthermore, the effect of Er2O3 addition was investigated in detail by power-loss analysis and scanning electron microscopy examination of microstructure. We found that samples with Er2O3 less than 0.04 wt % exhibit power loss similar to the sample without Er2O3 addition and with SiO2–CaO contents. Thus we conclude that the amplitude permeability and specific magnetization of Mn–Zn ferrites for high-frequency and high-power use were improved by a small Er2O3 addition (〈0.04 wt %).

Notes: 1. Contractions and electrical activity were recorded from isolated segments of longitudinal (L) and circular (C) myometrium from rats on gestation days 16–17 and 21 before and during parturition.2. The segments were arranged so that the activity of the two layers could be monitored simultaneously and independently.3. Out of the 15 preparations from days 16–17, 13 showed no co-ordination of activity between the layers. In the other two preparations a large contraction of C occasionally initiated a contraction of L. Surgical separation of the layers disrupted the co-ordination and L then developed its independent rhythm.4. On day 21 before delivery, eight of 10 preparations exhibited 1:1 co-ordination of activity between the two layers, but C did not consistently pace L. The pacing shifted from one layer to the other several times during an experiment.5. During parturition there was a 1:1 co-ordination of activity in all 10 preparations examined. In nine of these L initiated the activity of the C. Surgical separation of the layers disrupted the co-ordination and C developed its independent rhythm. In one the pacing shifted from one layer to the other several times during the experiment.6. In all cases where co-ordination between the layers was observed it was myogenic and apparently related to the spread of action potentials between the two muscles.
