    Notes: We have performed the first experiments to examine the neutral fragmentation paths following direct core-level excitation in a molecule. Using monochromatized synchrotron radiation in the range 100–140 eV, we have monitored the dispersed UV/optical fluorescence resulting from excitation of a Si 2p electron in SiF4. The main features in the fluorescence spectrum have been identified as emission from the SiF+4 D state and from excited SiF, Si, F, and Si+. Features in the fluorescence excitation spectra are assigned to excitation of a Si 2p electron to unoccupied valence orbitals, Rydberg orbitals, and shape resonances. There is a large enhancement in the yield of excited-state fragments following core-to-Rydberg excitation, which is due to the greater probability of the core-excited Rydberg state decaying, via a resonant Auger process, to highly excited, unbound states of SiF+4.

    Notes: The dissociative photoionization channels of gaseous Si(CH3)Cl3 and ion desorption mechanisms of solid-state analogs following valence-level excitation have been investigated by means of photoionization mass spectroscopy, threshold photoelectron spectroscopy (TPES), and photon-stimulated ion desorption (PSID) using synchroton radiation. The adiabatic ionization threshold of the parent molecular ion was determined to be 11.18 eV, consistent with the value of 11.16 eV obtained from the TPES spectrum. An energy shift ∼0.8 eV toward lower binding energies for the orbitals of solid Si(CH3)Cl3 with respect to the gas phase values was observed. Two thresholds at 14.97 and 17.51 eV in the CH3+ photoionization efficiency spectrum are probably associated with the ionization of 2e″ and 11a1 orbitals, respectively. The H+ desorption threshold at 20.1 eV in the PSID spectrum may be attributed to the excitation of C 2s electron correlation states to the unoccupied states. The Cl+ desorption threshold at 19.9 eV is likely initiated by an Auger-stimulated desorption process.© 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0021-9606(99)70731-2]

    Notes: Photon-stimulated ion desorption (PSID) from solid Si(CH3)2Cl2 following Cl 2p core-level excitation has been investigated along with the resonant photoemission spectra using synchrotron radiation. The Cl L23-edge total-electron yield spectrum of solid Si(CH3)2Cl2 mainly exhibits the Cl 2p→15a1*, Cl 2p→10b1* and shape resonance peaks. A significant dissimilarity between the Cl L23-edge total-electron yield spectrum and Cl+ PSID spectrum of solid Si(CH3)2Cl2 is observed. The desorption of atomic Cl+ ions is detected predominantly at the Cl 2p→15a1* excitation, while scarcely any Cl+ ions are observed following the Cl 2p→10b1* excitation and Cl 2p→shape resonance excitation. This indicates that the character of bound terminating orbital has a significant influence on the desorption processes. The enhanced Cl+ desorption yield at the Cl 2p→15a1* resonance is attributed to the the fast desorption process originating from the localization of the spectator electron in the strong antibonding orbital. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: High-resolution Si L23-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) total electron yield (TEY) spectrum and photon stimulated ion desorption (PSID) spectra of condensed Si(CH3)2Cl2 have been measured in the energy range of 102–115 eV using synchrotron radiation. Excitation from Si 2p to a Si–C antibonding orbital enhances the CH3+ formation, while excitation to the Si–Cl antibonding orbital gives rise to a pronounced Cl+ production. This indicates that the character of the bound terminating orbital has a significant influence on the fragmentation processes. The selective enhancement of H+ yield at a peak of ∼106.0 eV is interpreted in terms of the excited electron in the bound orbital with strong C–H antibonding character. Applying resonant photoemission spectroscopy, the spectator Auger process was found to be the dominant decay channel for the resonantly excited Si(2p) core hole of condensed Si(CH3)2Cl2. The close resemblance of the TEY and PSID spectra of solid Si(CH3)2Cl2 was attributable to spectator Auger decay of core excited states and subsequent Coulomb repulsion of multivalence hole final states as proposed by the Knotek and Fiebelman mechanism. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Since the electron cyclotron auto-resonance maser (CARM) is operated with the wave refractive index being very close to unity, a little variation of the refractive index in the CARM calculations might be crucial. Therefore, a modified self-consistent one-dimensional nonlinear model was developed by exactly setting the evolving wave refractive index and keeping all second-order terms to examine the inadequacy induced by the simplification of the earlier one-dimensional models. Comparisons of the numerical results obtained by the earlier models and the modified model for a CARM amplifier reveal that the inadequate relaxation of the limited azimuthal and axial bunching region for electrons to lose energy in the earlier models was the main reason for the overestimate of the linear gain and the saturated efficiency for the fast (the slow) wave branch with initial refractive index n0〈1 (n0〉1). However, the earlier model with fixed n0=1 is an excellent approximation whatever linear or saturated state is considered. The efficiency dependence of a CARM amplifier on some basic operating parameters was reexamined by the modified formulations. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We demonstrate the utility of a simple, inexpensive, microchannel plate (MCP) detector for monitoring the x-ray fluorescence (XRF) yield in the soft x-ray region. The detector consists of a dual MCP array, and appropriately biased grids. We compare the Al 2p XRF yield to the total-electron yield (TEY) (obtained with the same detector) of single-crystal sapphire. These measurements show that the XRF yield has the following advantages over TEY for monitoring absorption spectra in the soft x-ray region: (1) a greater bulk sensitivity, (2) an insensitivity to charging.

    Notes: We report the design, construction, and performance of a soft x-ray beam line with accessible photon energy 0.8–4.0 keV at the Synchrotron Radiation Center, University of Wisconsin–Madison. The beam line features an ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV) compatible high-precision double-crystal monochromator (DCM) covering Bragg angles 12°–72°, which was designed and built at the Physical Science Laboratory (PSL), University of Wisconsin–Madison. The monochromatic x rays are focused by a bent cylindrical mirror (Ni-coated fused silica, located 7.5 m from the source) into the experimental chamber (located 5.5 m from the mirror) down to a spot less than 1 mm(h)×3 mm(v). During the initial runs, the DCM used a pair of InSb(111) crystals and covered photon energy 1.75–3.7 keV. At the silicon K edge (1840 eV), the beam line delivered about 4×1011 photons/s with stored electron beam at 100 mA at 1 Gev, among the most intense and stable sources currently available at this energy. The energy resolution is about 0.9 eV at the Si K edge.
