    Notes: Magnetic relaxation measurements have been made on two sets of samples of Y1−xPrxBa2Cu3O7−δ high Tc superconductors with 0≤x≤0.10. The samples were prepared as fibers using a sol-gel process and as polycrystalline pellets using a standard solid-state reaction technique. In an applied field of 5 kOe at 30 K, the fluxoid pinning potential U was observed to increase approximately linearly with Pr concentration x at the rate dU/dx≈1 eV. A mechanism for the enhancement of U may be the suppression of the superconducting order parameter in the vicinity of the Pr ions due to magnetic pair breaking.

    Notes: Primary palatogenesis in mice is similar to that in humans, and spontaneous cleft lip appears to be multifactorially determined in both. Binding of a ligand to erbB4 has been shown to stimulate the receptor's protein kinase activity, which subsequently stimulates a signal-transduction cascade leading to cell growth and differentiation, and to morphogenesis during development. In this study, an immunohistochemical technique was used to investigate the temporal and spatial expression of erbB4 in the primary palate of cleft (A/WySn) and noncleft strains of mice (BALB/cBy). Positive staining of erbB4 was found in ectodermal and mesenchymal cells of facial prominences before the primary palate formation stage (day 10, hour 20) in both strains. During the primary palate formation stage (day 11, hour 20), positive staining of erbB4 was found in the ectodermal and mesenchymal cells of the facial prominences of the noncleft strain, but not in those of the cleft strain. These results suggest erbB4 expression may be associated with normal primary palatogenesis of mice and, conversely, cleft lip may be associated with a deficiency of erbB4 expression during primary palate formation in mice.

    Notes: Among Sparus sarba, Acanthopagrus latus, A. schlegeli and Pagrus major, P. major had the largest egg size, with the biggest micropyle funnel and the most numerous accessory openings. The reinforcement in the micropyle canals was species specific with eight spiral clockwise, five two-spiral clockwise, seven two-spiral clockwise, and 10 triangular ridges in S. sarba, A. latus, A. schlegeli, and P. major, respectively. A key to identify these four species based on micropyle characters is proposed for future applications. Cladistic analysis by using different parsimonious methods on the morphological character of the micropyle suggested that the generic interrelationship between Sparus and Acanthopagrus was closer than to the genus Pagrus. Furthermore, the congeneric species of A. latus and A. schlegeli were the most closely related, with S. sarba the second, and P. major the last. This result agreed with conclusions obtained from other character suites including morphological, biochemical and molecular data.

    Notes: Cleft lip, with or without cleft palate, is one of the most common defects in craniofacial formation. The primary palatogenesis of mice is similar to that of humans and spontaneous cleft lip is associated with genotype in both mice and humans. To investigate the temporal and spatial expression of ras genes in cleft (A/WySn) and non-cleft strains of mice (BALB/cBy), a broad spectrum ras antibody was used. Positive staining was found in ectodermal, mesenchymal, and neuroepithelial cells of facial prominences before the primary palate formation stage (10 d 20 hr) in both strains. During the primary palate formation stage (11 d 20 hr), positive staining was found in the ectodermal and mesenchymal cells of the facial prominences of the non-cleft strain but not in those of the cleft strain. These results suggest ras genes may play a role in the primary palatogenesis of mice. Cleft lip could be associated with the deficiency of ras gene expression during primary palate formation of mice.

    Notes: A bacterium identified as Proteus mirabilis was isolated from acclimated sludge from a dyeing wastewater treatment plant. This strain rapidly decolorized a deep red azo dye solution (RED RBN). Features of the decolorizing process related to biodegradation and biosorption were also studied. Although P. mirabilis displayed good growth in shake culture, color removal was best in anoxic static cultures. For color removal, the optimal pH and temperature were 6.5–7.5 and 30–35°C, respectively. The organism exhibited a remarkable color removal capability, even at a high concentration of azo dye. More than 95% of azo dye was reduced within 20 h at a dye concentration of 1.0 g L−1. Decolorization appears to proceed primarily by enzymatic reduction associated with a minor portion, 13–17%, of biosorption to inactivated microbial cells.

    Notes: The use of an immobilized-cell reactor for simultaneous carbon–nitrogen removal in wastewater with the monitoring of oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) in an intermittent aeration (IA) process was investigated. Under alternating aerated and nonaerated conditions, the ORP-time profile showed distinctive turning points that directly correlated with changes in the system chemistry and biological activity. The aeration ratio, defined as aeration time/cycle time, was optimum at 50% for obtaining the maximum efficiency of denitrification accompanied by sufficient nitrification. High simultaneous carbon–nitrogen removal efficiency could be achieved using the immobilized-cell reactor by applying the IA process. More than 90% of COD-removal efficiency and over 80% of total-nitrogen-removal efficiency were obtained using three aerobic–anoxic cycles per day at an aeration ratio of 50% and with a hydraulic retention time of 10 h.     Notes: Abstract Kinetics of enzymatic hydrolysis of starch to high maltose syrup (by simultaneous use of β-amylase and isoamylase) has been studied here. Main product of dual-enzyme system, maltose, showed a competitive inhibition effect on apparent overall activity of enzymes. Thermal inactivation behavior could be expressed by an empirical exponential function. A mathematical model developed here has described performance of an ultrafiltration reactor (UFR) system by considering effects of product inhibition, enzyme deactivation, and formation of side-product. Effects of concentrations in substrate and enzymes, with residence time of substrate on the performance of UFR has been investigated. Proposed model has been successfully verified in simulating experimental data under various conditions. Operation stability of UFR has also been studied.
