Notes: Graves’ disease (GD) is a common, autoimmune disease involving the thyroid gland, and it has been previously suggested that pro-inflammatory cytokines are involved in the disease's pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to test whether the interleukin (IL)-6 gene promoter region, or tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α or IL-8 gene 3′-untranslated region (3′-UTR) polymorphisms could provide useful genetic markers for an individual's susceptibility to GD. A normal control group of 60 healthy people and 95 patients featuring GD were examined. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based restriction analysis was performed for the three gene polymorphisms using endonucleases BsrBI, NcoI and ApaLI, respectively. We found no significant difference between the frequencies of genotype and allelic variants for the IL-6 gene promoter (−572 G/C), the TNF-α gene promoter (−308 A/G) and the IL-8 gene 3′-UTR (2767 A/G) for GD patients and for normal controls. Cytokines are a large group of proteins that may elicit multiple effects upon immunological reactions. It still appears to be very worthwhile to continue to aggressively search for cytokine gene polymorphisms in order to predict the development of such disease.

Notes: The concept of the capacitively coupled single-electron transistor (CSET) is generalized to a device based on a linear array of N tunnel junctions. The basic characteristics of such multiple-junction CSETs are calculated for several distributions of tunnel junction and coupling capacitances. The results indicate that for optimized parameters, the operating temperature and parameter tolerances increase appreciably with N, with the most striking gains for N(approximately-less-than)5. For example, a five-junction transistor may provide a 2.5-fold increase of the maximum operating temperature, for the same minimum feature size. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present the results of numerical simulations of a functionally complete set of complementary logic circuits based on capacitively coupled single-electron transistors (CSETs). The family includes an inverter/buffer stage, as well as two-input NOR, NAND, and XOR gates, all using similar tunnel junctions, and the same dc bias voltage and logic levels. Maximum operation temperature, switching speed, power consumption, noise tolerances, error rate, and critical parameter margins of the basic gates have been estimated. When combined with the data from a preliminary geometrical analysis, the results indicate that implementation of the CSET logic family for operation at T∼20 K will require fabrication of structures with ∼2-nm-wide islands separated by ∼1-nm-wide tunnel gaps. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract An ultra-thin AuGeNi alloy (84%/12%/4% by weight) overlayer of 5 nm was evaporated onto Te-doped n-type (100) oriented GaSb substrates. Samples were annealed in ultra-high vacuum (UHV), with a base pressure of 10−10 Torr at either 300°C, 500°C, or 700°C for 12 h. The reacted interface was then revealed by Ar ion sputter-depth profiling. The highest percentage of Ge in the deep interface region was observed for the sample annealed at 500°C. Annealing at 500°C also leads to a uniform distribution of Ga, Sb, and Au concentrations. Results show that virtually all Au, Ge, and Ni evaporate away after annealing at 700°C. Au-based AuGa alloy formation was indicated by the shifts of Au 4f core-levels and the metallic Ga 3d peak. The small variation of Au 4f core-levels with sputtering for samples annealed at 500°C is the evidence of AuGa uniform alloying from the surface to the interface. It has been, therefore, concluded that annealing at 500°C forms a more uniform distribution of cluster size throughout the interface than annealing at 300°C or 700°C.

Notes: Abstract Nearly 50% of terrigenous materials delivered to the world's oceans are delivered through just twenty-one major river systems. These river-dominated coastal margins (including estuarine and shelf ecosystems) are thus important both to the regional enhancement of productivity and to the global flux of C that is observed in land-margin ecosystems. The tropical regions of the biosphere are the most biogeochemically active coastal regions and represent potentially important sinks of C in the biosphere. Rates of net primary productivity and biomass accumulation depend on a combination of global factors such as latitude and local factors such as hydrology. The global storage of C in mangrove biomass is estimated at 4.03 Pg C; and 70% of this C occurs in coastal margins from 0° to 10° latitude. The average rate of wood production is 12.08 Mg ha−1 yr−1, which is equivalent to a global estimate of 0.16 Pg C/yr stored in mangrove biomass. Together with carbon accumulation in mangrove sediments (0.02 Pg C/yr), the net ecosystem production in mangroves is about 0.18 Pg C/yr. Global estimates of export from coastal wetlands is about 0.08 Pg C/yr compared to input of 0.36 Pg C/yr from rivers to coastal ecosystems. Total allochthonous input of 0.44 Pg C/yr is lower than in situ production of 6.65 Pg C/yr. The trophic condition of coastal ecosystems depends on the fate of this total supply of 7.09 Pg C/yr as either contributing to system respiration, or becoming permanently stored in sediments. Accumulation of carbon in coastal sediments is only 0.41 Pg C/yr; about 6% of the total input. The NEP of coastal wetlands also contribute to the C sink of coastal margins, but the source of this C is part of the terrestrial C exchange with the atmosphere. Accumulation of C in wood and sediments of coastal wetlands is 0.205 Pg C/yr, half the estimate for sequestering of C in coastal sediments. Burial of C in shelf sediments is probably underestimated, particularly in tropical river-dominated coastal margins. Better estimates of these two C sinks in the tropics, coastal wetlands and shelf sediments, is needed to better understand the contribution of coastal ecosystems to the global carbon budget.
